widgeon man
Well an unlucky flight occurred this week.......... After a good start on teal and mallard at the start on another marsh, the other evening I decided to try a new marsh on a tide flight late afternoon followed by the evening flight if it looked ok.... More of a look about than any real anticipation of a shot. After a brisk walk along the sea wall a good way, I struck out across the salting to try and tuck in on the waters edge. Before I could drop the rucksack and un-sleeve my gun a pack of teal flashed up the tide edge and seeing me headed back the same way..... Hmm might do ok!...... Well that was all I saw bar one pair of wigeon out over the water! As I was pushed back with the tide, I made camp on dry ground and settled in for the evening flight, rather than following the tide back out again.... Several greylag called on the tide edge as dusk drew in and more began moving inland, several parties made for the mud and eventually I called a single on, the dog shuffled and wagged her tail as I called the bird on, the goose spotting the movement and back pedalling at range! Up went the 10ga took a shot but didn't connect! Bloody dog! (My excuse!) another bunch passed by but too far over and then the night drew in and it was time for the long slog back. So chalk up the first blank! But an exciting and promising start to the 2015/16 season and I enjoyed every minute!
fenboy
My first trip was a blank this year ,I did miss a mallard so only myself to blame , I had mallard on each of my first five flights last season . We all know a blank flight is on the cards each time we head out and I guess my season last year was around 50 / 50 to birds in the bag and blanks Sure you will have plenty more blanks along with some memorable flights.
