Steve Lovatt the owner of Westfield answered this question on Shootclay forum.

Prize fund is £1,000 total spread across the board.

Now you don't need to be a genius to work out his numbers, 200 entries @£45 = £9,000. Two hundred competition entries at a £5 extra each = £1,000 leaving a residue of £8,000 to contribute to paying of wages, ground rent , insurance and other associated costs.

He has found the magic formula to satisfy his customers, so they patronise him.

If you are not happy with the costs , simple, don't go If more ground owners followed his lead and put as much effort into setting the competition up we would see a vast improvement in shooting standards in my opinion.

Thanks Salopian, for the the reply. I shoot at Westfields, Weston Wood and Garlands, all of which offer excellent quality shoots. Yes, I see how the numbers stack up but surely if £5 per £45 competition entry goes into the (excellent) prize fund surely the birds only entry should be £40. So why is it £3 extra? I prefer to shoot competition but since retiring money is a bit more relevant.
