Glenlivet
Hi guys. Recently bought a Freelander TD4 with 100,000 on the clock. Whilst it has no symptoms of a problem with the VCU, I'm thinking of having it changed. Bell Engineering offer a recon unit fitted for £320 including bearings. Does anyone have any knowledge of this company? The price seems very reasonable.
SpringDon
Not used them myself but on another forum they have a good reputation. In fact the worst thing said about them was that they don't change the unit themselves but use an outside company. But that's only a problem (if it even is) if you're getting them to do the fitting. I wouldn't replace a vcu unless there were symptoms or it failed inspection or you're just off round the world.

I've decided to hang fire for the time being and get it changed at the first sign of a problem. Not on my travels again yet.....unfortunately☹️ Edited January 22, 2016 by Glenlivet
Tommo
Glenlivet, I ran a TD4 for about 5yrs, i bought it 07 (52plate with 60k) and besides servicing (and changing the second oil filter thats a pain to get too) the only real mechanical works required was the rear diff mounts (apparently designed by a student at LR and they only lasted 30k before breaking down - giving you s 'clonk' everytime you put your foot down £55 for the set and an hours work sorted them! The only other issue was it went all LR on me at 150k and welded a heat plug in the head, dropped a cylinder and the abs pump started to fail, thats when it was sold. I recall changing the window guides (nylon rubbish failing as usual) and break-light bulbs! If you have any queries i did all my own work so know the TD4 very well! This is an 02 TD4 ES which I bought trade, asking was £2000 I paid £1500. I knew the two front windows and the driver's door CL weren't working, total cost of work £400. It's immaculate inside and out, if no further problems then it was a bargain < touching lots of wood!> Edited January 24, 2016 by Glenlivet
