humperdingle
As the title says... If you buy an old shotgun, what way is there to tell if it is still in proof? Any info is appreciated.
mry716
Measure it. The barrel flats will show the proof size so then measure the internal diameter of the barrels at 9"from the breach and assess the difference if any. If it is over proof size it is out of proof. But remember that a gun may still be in proof yet be in such a poor condition (pitted barrels - off the face etc) that it would not be accepted for re-proof or even safe enough to actually use.
