Daveo26
Iv recently picked up a very tidy, little used fox mod 2 in .22 hornet. It's dated ''83! Iv noticed the barrel touches the woodwork it's impossible to slide paper between them. Should it be free floating? If I went ahead and stripped it, to inspect the barrel channel. Is there anything to be aware of? Because it's quite on old gun there is not much info outthere in web land. If I removed the the retaining screws does the mag housing/trigger and the action separate? I can't see any other way for it to come out. Cheers gents. Bewsher500
have you tried shooting it? I had a .,222 version of what you have and it was never free floating, worked just fine as was standard bottom metal to receiver screw set up built around a mini mauser action what trigger group does yours have? single or double? low and big occular scopes sometime foul the bolt handle get your grinder, fine paper and cold blue kit out to remedy and keep the low cheek weld
Daveo26
Yes Iv shot it. It zeros fine then it seems to wonder the next time I use it. If I shoot a 3 shot group rapidly the third is always a flier, when the barrel is warm. It has the double set trigger and butter knife bolt handle, clears the scope no problems. Did you sell your .222 a while back, all Nicely refurbed? I've seen pics of one on line
Bewsher500
yes, could have been mine, replaced it with a sako and whilst its nice its just fussy the brno is a cracker,.should be easy enough to float, before you start sanding just put a washer under the front action screw between stock and receiver, then repeat your shooting test it will lift the barrel clear non permanently to at least check if the channel interference is the issue it could be as much the action moving round in the rear of the stock as it is the barrel walking post up some pics of where the receiver is hitting the inside of the stock. Daveo26
Iv whipped it out of the stock just now. The last inch of wood in the forend has been left proud and is hard up against the barrel. I'm concerned if I removed it, what possible knock on effects could it have with the rest of the action fit? I'm not sure what to do at this point. The gun was zeroed on Friday went lamping sat night, missed a fox. Checked on Sunday, it was shooting high right. But it groups. It has millet mounts which I'm not sure about. They are the windage adjustable ones
Bewsher500
Oh christ on a bike ditch the millet mangle loks they are utter ****! the point you see in the barrel channel is a purpose built pressure point common on wooden stocked rifles of a certain age seriously before you start reaming out the stock exclude the scope the mounts and refit the action with a 1-2mm washer between the stock and action will take you three shots to see if it is the pressure but I will be very surprised if it is grouping but the POI is shifting dramatically that is usually down to something changing rather than barrel stock interference walking shots that stray further and further from the zero point as the barrel heats up or the barrelled action walks around in the stock is much more common when its a stock fit. sudden shift in POI but grouping is poxy mounts or scope internal shift
Daveo26
Fair enough. Thanks for your advice, those mounts have been niggling me since I picked the gun up. I'll swap the scope and mounts and see how I get on. Thanks again
