Eddiethegun
Bob raised a good point there, what bullet weight? As it is a .223 what twist rate are T3's? 55 grain, twist rate not sure I'm new to ctr fire, have had precharge air for years and 17 HMR for a couple of years but this is new to me. Thanks for all the help good to see people that take interest. Eddie
Dunkield
Tikka say it is 1-8, which seems to be subject of much debate on the web I always <thought> (I don't know this, so find out for yourself) that the Varmints were 1-8 and the Lites are 1-12? Maybe other T3 owners will confirm that? Here is the tech sheet: http://www.tikka.fi/pdf/specs/Lite.pdf Either way it may be buying a box of AE's in 50grn to see how they go. My money is still on giving it a damn good clean, I was non believer until I saw what it did for my rifle on a range day. I will dig out the 'before' and 'after' targets if I can find them... Only fired 60 shots through it and cleaned every 10 shots with a bore snake ? Can you tell me how the bullet weight/twist rate works. Also not being a target shooter or crack shot what should I be looking for at 100 yards, I saw one thread on here when a guy said if you cannot hold 1 1/2 inch at 200 yards do not shoot at live quarry, is this standard or bull. I know that when out hunting with the 17 Hmr I am not a bad shot at rabbits at 100 to 120 yards. Eddie
JohnGalway
Get someone else to shoot your rifle, someone who's a better shot than you (just incase, I'm not having a go). Change that gun rest for something else. I use bipod and a balaclava under the butt of the rifle. Proper shooting bags would be best Bin the bore snake. Buy a Parker Hale coated rod and jag, some KG12 big bore cleaner and patches of your choice, I use Napier on the big roll and cut it to size. You'll need a bore guide too (damn handy job). I soak a patch, run it through the barrel, take off the jag and remove the rod. Then repeat. Then I run two dry patches down the bore to clean it out. That's my entire cleaning regime now, I was shooting 1.5 inch at best like you before now I'm down to 0.75-1 inch. I never use the brass/bronze (am always getting mixed up there) brush anymore. Last night I heard WHY some free floating barrels are supposed to touch the barrel, it's an (factory versus custom thing) attempt to stop your shots "walking" when the barrel heats up instead of using a more expensive barrel (something to do with stress? Someone with a better idea will explain that one!). I changed mine, that'll be up to you after you've tried simpler solutions. My 1 in 8 T3 Varmint likes 55 grain Remmington Accutip, Hates 75 grain stuff, go figure, try different weights and brands to see what your rifle likes. Hit's crows at 200 yards... Dunkield
As John said, give a proper clean, as that is an easy one and then take it from there. I use a rod and Butches Bore Shine - works for me Here is a good .223 page, there is about twist rates in ther as well. http://www.6mmbr.com/223Rem.html
Dunkield
Here is a clean barrel / dirty barrel example for you. Until this day happened, I didn't give a monkeys about cleaning my rifle. These groups were shot with a bog standard M695 Tikka 6.5 at 100 yards wthin about 15 mins of each other. They are Federal Classic 140grns I had been there all afternoon so probably fired about 30-40 shots at this point. Dirty: and the 3 quick shots after cleaning and before the range closed: Clean:
