sweepy
Ok have been up to gunsmiths to look for a new rifle (243) when varition comes through, just wondering what is general opionion on what size and quality of scope to go for,Ihave been told to either spend loads, buy night vision right through to the gunsmith telling me that 3-9x40 plently go enough for shooting in these parts,so Iwould value any help on this topic I will be mainly shooting at night for foxes and as with all of us money will be a deciding facter Sweepy
Devilishdave
do a search some one on here is selling a Shmidt and Bender 8x56 at a very reasonable price. This will be ideal for your .243 and for foxing at night. Dave

JohnGalway
Depends how much money you've got to spend doesn't it? Swarovski, Nightforce, Schmidt & Bender will be the best. I have a Nightforce 5.5-22x56 on my .223. I've used that size scope set at 8x for shots out to 160-170 yards (longest shot on another .223 but same scope). I've not yet shot a fox out past that but personally I'd give it a little more zoom beyond that. There is a lot of sense in what Codling has said. A fixed power scope means a lot less messing around, simply because you can't! Point and squeeze. As far as I understand it a 56mm objective lens has it's best light transmission set at 8x, a 50mm objective at 7x. As for quality, simple one, buy the best you can't afford for foxing. The second hand S&B would be worth a look, find out what reticle is on it, and I would say the German made 8x56 would be better than the Hungarian assembled same model. lazza
S&B 8x56 for me, however most of the more expensive scopes would do the job.
deadeye ive
Another vote for the 8 x 56 Schmidt .............The ONLY difference between the Hungarian and German version is that you can pay up to £150 more to have the words made in Germany etched on it ........Same 30 year guarantee and same 10 year free service facility if required ........The reputation of the brand name must be protected at all cost's no matter where the final parts are assembled . TBH I think it's a very clever ploy to introduce people like myself who operate on a tight budget to the world of S/B in the hope than when you change or alter you'll go for a German variable ...........Once registered you should see the catalogue they send you of their products . Best to have the option of too much scope than not enough as well
