Browning
When cleaning my rifles I usually push the patch through, using a spear tip jag. Then remove the patch and unscrew the jag beofre withdrawing the cleaning rod in readiness for the next patch. My question is.....is there any need to remove the jag before withdrawing the rod? Or is it OK to withdraw the rod with the jag still attached?
Dunkield
Always a contentious issue, cleaning I remove the patch and then carefully pull the rod back through, if the rod is the right size the jag should hardly touch the bore if at all. Some will say, you have to be very carefull etc etc, others will say if a bullet goes through at 3,000 fps what damage can a brass jag do? etc etc... WeihrauchPower
I'd say there is nothing wrong with leaving the jag attached. I can't imagine unscrewing and re-screwing with every patch. I use about 30 patches a clean, there'd be no thread left on the rod after a month. The only place i wouldn't want to snag is the throat, if your using a bore guide though this won't happen. JohnGalway
I used to unscrew the jag (spear tip), don't bother anymore. I use a bore guide too.
Browning
Thanks for your replies lads. I guessed as much. My main concern was could the back of the jag damage the crown as it was pulled back through. I gues as it's tapered and made of brass there's not much chance of that as long as it's pulled back past the crown carefully.

Just use your thumb rested on the cheekpiece as a guide and never rush the job. Failing that just use a bore guide!
