I am waiting at the moment on my fac for a .22 to start w/ but in the meantime i would like to get some advice on how to get into deer shooting (muntjac only) and i need to know what to do first, some stalking techniques and where i am most likley to find muntjac so that in a year i can put a variation in for a .223 for vermin and small deer species (muntjac and chinese water deer) i have also heard that you dont need a specific variation to shoot these with .22 centre fires if the rifle is for vermin due to muntjac being a pest species now.

All replies much appreciated. :welcomeani:

Muntjac are not a vermin, my understanding is although the police are considering them as vermin this is only a temporary measure to save a paper work clog up, and on next renewal the definitions on each certificate will change, so therefore a new certificate should read some thing like .223 for vermin, fox and small deer, but I could be wrong :welcomeani::P

If you have a permission with muntjac on go straight for deer, all you have to do is satisfy 'good reason' ( read the HO guild lines ) :good:

I guess every police force is different but my understanding is that you can interpret 'vermin' as including muntjac and CWD for .22 centrefire ONLY if you already have deer on your certificate for a .240+ calibre. As Paul says, this is only a temporary measure. The wording on my certificate which has only recently come back from the police now states ".223 for Fox/Muntjac/Chinese Water Deer/vermin control".

My worrey with the way the Fire Arms licencing department have handeld this is tha people start to treat small deer as vermin. This is not in the spirit of what he FAC people are trying to acheive. It is only because it is to big a job to give a variation to everyone with a .22CF who now has legal permission to shoot Muntjack and CWD.
