Unusual Roe Buck Head.

I just collected this from the Taxidermists today. I shot it on the 9th April from approx 170 yds with a .243 100gn softpoint.

When I looked at him through the scope his antlers blended in with the bushes directly behind him. Because of the angle he was at and strange shape of the antlers, at first I was unsure if it was a Buck or a Doe with a couple of bare branches behind its head. Once he moved around a little I could see he was definitely a Buck and placed my shot in the boileroom.

It wasn't until I walked over to him that I realised what a large Buck he was. He was well proportioned with a broad head and very heavily built.

The "straight" antler measures 21cm from the base of the coronet to the tip. There is a 4cm curved upward pointing spike coming out of the back of the antler just above the coronet which is not visible in the photos.

The "curved" antler measures 17cm around the outside of the curve.

As you can see, the curved antler sits a lot further forward on the skull than the straight one. The Taxidermists immediate impression when he saw the head was that the animal had probably been involved in some kind of an accident when it was young. Today he told me that he found no signs of any old injuries when he was working on it.

If anyone is interested, the mount was done by "Benny" Bennett of Hainford, near Norwich. I take all my stuff to him and the quality of his work is absolutely superb. PM me if you want his phone number.
