tony2
ive got permision to shoot on a new farm, the farm is situated between three woods the crop growing at the moment is mainly wheat as are the surrounding farms.but the farmer has also put in 30 acres of rape which is now being cut. i would like to know if it is possible to decoy on the cut rape if so would it be the same tactics as decoying windblown barley? i have been watching the pigeons over the last couple of weeks and thier are two major flight lines which cut right across the rape fields. regards tony
Flanker
Did just this at the weekend and the birds came into decoys set on top of blown rape really well. Main problem was recovering shot birds! Rape is very dense and difficult to walk in without causing damage to crop!
Highlander
Swathed rape will attract pigeons of that there's little doubt BUT if you do more damage than the birds (and it's easy to do) farmer might not welcome you back. Be very VERY careful.
Country Boy
OK so here is a tip for shooting over swathed rape: presuming you can access it immediately the swathing is completed, the rape will still be green and if you know (you should) the flightlines you will know exactly where to site a couple of hides one for the prevailing wind and another opposite side of field in case wind changes or the birds do, if from the hides you are not looking looking down the rows but over them simply move enough rape to allow you to pass through and move a portion in each row so that you can move about the field to place decoys and retrieve shot birds! If you do this once the rape has begun to dry you will knock out the seeds and do more damage than the stoggies. C.B. :yp:
