millo2
Currently looking in to getting a cocker. My first dog was a labrador, and I trained him myself. He isnt the perfect dog by any means, but he does what I want him to do, most of the time lol. I am thinking about getting a cocker as I like the look of them more than a springer, and have heard they may be slightly easier to train. Do you think it is worth getting a cocker with only one trained lab under my belt, or just play it safe with another labrador until I have produced a better trained labrador? Roger_Rabbit
Millo, how long have you got to finish Uni ?? Get a job (London or abroad) ?? Your Lab requires replacing (too old) ?? Cocker a little bit harder, not much, to train than ESS (MY opinion) Wait until you have completed your education. Stay single. Get a place in the country. THEN get your cocker (& decoy's) ..... plus pay me back my taxes Probably be 28 yo by then Enjoy working your Lab until then
millo2
6 Months until I finish. I will hopefully get a job in september, and I have only applied for ones from nine until five initially. My lab is only 5, but I want to work two dogs. I aren't single at the moment mate, and I can't see that changing, unless something bad happens. I will be living in the country, as I hate living in a city at the moment. Roger_Rabbit
Then go for a cocker Millo .... But, a good pup will cost more than an ESS .... 400 - 450 quid. use some of your grant or my taxes Must be from a working pedigree. Provided you are happy with your Lab's ability that's all you need. A spaniel is a different ball game for training. Enjoy the experience and remember .. a dog is for life
millo2
Yeah I know. I'm going to try and persuade the parents to get me one for my 21st in July which would be handy. I don't use your taxes anymore, we get loans, unfortunately. Need to find some working strains that a good for working, not trialling Scott
Roger_Rabbit
www.whaupleygundogs.co.uk Andy does'nt take any doo doo, and he wont sell a pup to anyone. Give him a try but you must book well in advance and pay him a visit prior to the pups being born. Andy & Fiona are great, thier knowledge on cockers is unbelievable. (no difference between working & trialling ... )
millo2
So not like labs then? Trialling labs are more for speed, and are more slender which I dont like Scott
Roger_Rabbit
All down to genetics Millo .. In an ideal world the norm is to see the dam & sire then you have a good chance of the pups turning out the same, but it's no guarantee .. That's one reason why Andy asks you to visit him (North Yorks) before the pups are born, you get to see both parents. However, this is the crunch, .. Andy will be assessing your suitability as a prospective owner and he will tell you .. :*) :*) There are big, small, slender, large boned & small boned working & trialling Labs. (it's your choice)
