  1. Take it no stud fee then Elma ?? Pick of the litter ?? Woodie's had his good day now let's hope you have yours with the trap:D
  2. Count me in .. just need a little notice Look forward to meeting NTTF.
  3. Such a thing as Old Farmers Club
  4. I think the jury is still out on this one .... Some very interesting posts on the 'Flapper' of late specific on how and when to use, I intend to go the route suggested by Cranfield. "don't have it flapping all of the time". The Mojo does not have a timer ?? It may attract the birds but also give the impression they are taking off. If you find space in the suitcase for one don't forget to let us know how good or bad it is Enjoy your hol's
  5. Not a very good call Pete, is it black plastic, approx 2 - 3 inches long with a very long reed ?? Too short and difficult to get a variable depth of tone due to the reed blocking with spit (saliva) :*) also difficult to project the volume any distance. Try and find a wooden Lohman .. far, far better but more expensive. I have the Lohman and a Haydel's acrylic which is brilliant. Not sure if you can purchase the Haydel in this country but you should have no problem finding the Lohman. Dump the Acme .. in my opinion
  6. Pavman, the kennel and run sounds superb .. well done. Don't forget YOU will have to fit inside the kennel for maint. work and cleaning / disinfecting the floor, 4 x 3 will have you on your hand's and knee's in the **** A flat roof makes a good launch pad over the fence. Best bedding (IMO) is shreded paper .. do you know any large office's ?? plus it's free just burn it each time the bedding is replace. The requirement is for the bed to be raised off the floor. No need for any heating in this country but remember if you install a lamp (NTTF has the better solution with a radiant heater) it will be dangling from the ceiling with chewable 240v cable, Lab's will chew anything. (4 x 3 in size)
  7. Gent's .... there is NO merit what so ever in purchasing a cross breed gundog for the purposes you require Accidents do happen when bitches are in season but no responsible owner would deliberately cross a Lab with a Springer or vice versa. Quite simply there is no need, a pure bred Lab or Springer with correct training will flush and retrieve with no problems what so ever, they have been doing it for over 200 years. It's nothing new to see Springador's advertised (for ridicules prices) with glowing reports from the breeder .. CR*P, he's just trying to get rid of the pup's. Don't be conned or mislead, .. they are a breeding accident. :*) Genetically it does not follow that crossing two types of dog with the characteristics that you require will produce a pup that is 50% Lab and 50% Springer either mentally or in appearance. (Lurcher breeders can relate to this) What do you get with a Sprocker ?? (Cocker cross Springer or v/v) Answer .. a bigger (usually) Cocker .. what the h*ll for ?? No benefit what so ever. Get a pure bred dog with a suitable working pedigree and training should be relatively straight forward. For Lab's in Kent try; Bourne Park Gundogs Humble Bee Labradors. or Jonathan Nightingale, Marden, Kent. 01622-832241

    one eye

Bl**dy hell Lander, sad, sad day's mate. Be positive .... the best of luck.
  9. Clean teeth are a must .. as FM say's. Get into the habit of cleaning her teeth each night. Assuming she is on the same dry food brand you can try a digestive supplement such as "Springers" which contains garlic. (250g = 5:95p) it's also great for skin and coat condition.
  10. Can you see her rib's ?? B) Has she been wormed ?? B) Flea'd ?? I may be inclined to give 150g morning and the same 150g at evening time. At 6 months she is still developing so a little too much is far better than too little. Appetite does vary from dog to dog, also depends on exercise
  11. What breed of dog are you looking for ?? Most trainers will sell you a fully trained dog, it's their job and income, you will have to pay .. (3,000 quid for a fully trained Lab ) No different from your local Ferrari dealer .. if you've got the money Try this website in Cambridgeshire .... www.africandawnstrainingkennels.co.uk Certainly not a criticism but don't be so serious .... If it's fun for you .. it's fun for the dog Also take a look at www.ukgundogs.org Full of good advice and ... www.countrywaysgundogs.com Read the book, watch the video, make the kennel, construct the run, buy the pup, then enjoy
  12. Doh .... :*) :*) Nice Scooby Adam .. not seen that paintwork before Ethan takes after his mum for looks Me thinks it could be Ethan sucking up to mum for Adam to go shooting (it will be in a few years time)
  13. Ahhhhhh, the joy's of parenthood Rob Saturday night and watching the telly .... :( No trips to the cinema ? Welcome to the real world PS. luv his pic .... don't know about retrieving .. missus may have an imput :*)
  14. Congrat'..s on the new pup Tucker, happy days ahead Dog or bitch ?? not that it makes any difference .... :( Every one has their favorite brand, Beta, Omega, Skinners etc. .... so it's just down to individual choice. Eukanuba is bl**dy expensive ... that said it appears very popular with certain breeders & trainers, however sponsorship is a good way to advertise. My advice :*) .. keep the pup on exactly the same brand as it's on now until approx 20 weeks then introduce (slowly) a 24 - 25% protein food but decide which one by purchasing the small packs first. Chicken & rice is good if you don't want to feed soya but it's slighty more expensive. I have a local supplier that do their own at 6:99 for 15kg of 25% and it's good ....
  15. The wooden box is for black powder .. lockable and red lable, but you require a separate certificate to store BP at home, plus the box has to be inspected by the local FA officer. The only law that covers the storage of cartridges (indirectly) is the quantity of nitro powder you can keep. For our 'normal' loads for pigeon (30g) you can store 14,000 cartridges Above this amount and you require authorisation from the FAO as technically you have exceeded the set amount of nitro stored :*) Useless piece of info .. :( .. but now you know.
  16. Do you mean a Drop Box :*) T.B.F.
  17. A very difficult one to put on paper VD .... :*) Apologies for asking so many questions In my experience a lurcher is better than a terrier but .. are you specific on terrier or do you have an open mind ?? Do you have a terrier or are you about to purchase a pup ?? What breed (or cross) are you looking to train ?? Certain breeds do what terriers are supposed to do and some are a little laid back on the outright aggression, what type are you after ?? Terriers are very difficult to train for anything, their nature is channeled in one direction and you have to harness that to suit your needs .. Any dog can be taught to sit etc. and walk to heal, .. , have you ever seen a terrier off it's lead ?? :( The short answer in reality is that you don't train the dog .. it trains itself with experience. I can't add anything to NTTF's advice .. spot on For marking the buries a small whippet cross lurcher, which wont dig, is a far better option and it stands a great chance of catching any bunnies that bolt. Also lurchers are ferret friendly A terrier has very little chance of catching bolting bunnies, it will chase but never outrun. The knock on, due to frustration, is for the terrier to be too close to the bolt hole or start digging  Good luck and keep us informed how the terrier training goes
  18. Very nice YP, love photo number 4, .... the mind is able but the body is unwilling :*) I don't know if Cranfield saw the female anti being interviewed on the late night news ?? complete with her BIG fur hat ........
  19. J.S., my reason for recommending a Lab was based on the info Nick supplied and not a statement that Lab's are better than spaniels. I think you will agree that a Lab is easier to train than any spaniel breed, don't forget Nick is not looking for a peg dog or trialing the dog, it's for beating and hopefully assisting with his future gamekeeping duties. Also it will be Nick's first gundog. .. If Nick has trained his lurcher(s) then he should have very few problems with a Lab. based on it's intended use. A spaniel for beating will require a lot more training than a Lab .... A spaniel for picking up (distance) will require a lot more training than a Lab .... But I am delighted he has chosen a cocker .. and he loves it.
  20. Keith, I don't have one .. quite like the design and it appears robust enough, I am tempted but not committed .. would have to try it first and 29 quid aint cheap :( May wait until I see one at a game fair .... My problem is shooting while sitting, straight out in front or committed birds are fine but crossers left to right or vise versa and directly overhead, I have to stand up. Been shooting for 35 years and have allways been the same, no chance of me changing and I don't want to change .... which leads me to the folding action of the seat. .. Every time I stand up will the cushion fold, no great problem, but every time I sit down do I have to hold the cushion with one hand and my gun with one hand ?? also I imagine looking backwards to make sure me bum goes in the right place :*) I have used the drum inside a kit bag for 20 years and it's as near perfection that I will ever want .. just a bit to bulky hence my reason for looking .... You buy one and tell us what it's like
  21. Love it  :( 10 man Canada (didn't know they had a team  ) beat you good & proper dazza .. Don't blame Sven, England just don't have the quality .... Over paid and average players who will never win anything .... Except beating the Scots, Irish x 2 and Welsh .... About time we had a British team but too many fat cats to allow that
  22. Paul, ad in March Sporting Gun, Hob ferrets, silver and polecats 5 quid, working strain and 8ft locator c/w 3 micro collars 50 quid. 01302-328502 or 07771 626651 (S. Yorkshire)
  23. Hi FM, I think you have hit the nail on the head with " victim of your own success as a breeder of game birds you are putting a regular and sustainable food supply on a plate for the birds ". The incident with the Goss happened the season before last, definately no jesses, in all honesty I could not say about rings :*) I never gave it a thought :*) plus being a smoker for 40 years (man & boy) the sudden sprint almost left me in the same condition as the pheasant :*) I don't move in the circle of breeders / trainers, the closest I have been in contact was to request a couple of guys too leave private land, unforetunately for them their American white tailed kite was perched 15 foot up in a dead elm tree and refusing to come down. (took them over 1 hour to coax it down) Not being in the circle .. you don't get to know about escaped captives :yp: Saw the bird again on one occation only during that season as it took off from it's perch, the wood is approx 50 acre, inverted 'L' shape on a steap incline, 2 good rides, a 400 yards grass strip for the guns, and another wood directly behind the guns of approx 15 acres. (managed woods) .. Never saw the bird last season. I certainly appreciate and respect your views and fully respect your knowledge .. (which is far greater than mine) I will remain adamant that we have too many Buzzards ..................... This coming season I intend to be equipped with a camera, and will try and post some pic's of our 3 breeding pairs of Buzzards. Could be a bit mundane for the members but I will try and make them interesting
