nick_c
Hello all, very new to clay shooting and require a bit of advice. If I were to take a few different cartridges and test them on a pattern plate, what pattern am I looking for? what makes one pattern better than another? What distance would you shoot the plate from? Hopefully going to do this soon but need to know what I am looking at. Thank you, Nick.
Peter De La Mare
The same distance that you are shooting most of your birds from. Most people start with 30 yards and then go up. Any less than this could possibly create ricochets, depending on the material of the plate. You're looking for how dense the pellets are within the 'cloud' or circle the shot creates. Look for any gaping 'holes' where there are no pellet strikes. Start with your cylinder choke, then change choke and try again. Remember to whitewash the plate after each shot. You'll also see if your gun/mount is actually shooting to the point of aim, or where you think it is. Make sure you aim for a centre point/mark on the plate. http://www.shotgun-insight.com/LEPA_How.html http://www.basc.org.uk/media/shotgun_chokes_and_patterns.pdf Edited January 14, 2009 by Peter De La Mare
