another one...

our dog is fine with other dogs in the sense that he shows no sign of aggression what so ever...

however.... he just wants to play with every dog he see's....this can be a little impracticle sometimes and i often wish he would just have a sniff and say hello without starting to prance around with a grin on his face.... its amusing, but not always appropriate.

he doesnt do it in an agressive manner either, most other dog owners can see he's still a pup and wants to play chase, but im not happy that he looses concentration and i loose control of his behaviour to a degree.... he will sit when i tell him to despite looking like he wants to explode from tail wagging but cannot seem to keep his concentration and becomes excited...

if we pass another dog on a walk, he will walk past with out any bother other then a turning head or a wandering eye, but if theres a dog up ahead, he wants to catch up desperatly and cannot be distracted from doing so ...if we stop to talk to another dog owner he find it hard to resist wanting to play....

what is my best approach for getting him to calm down when he meets another dog...?

One word: Sausages

Cook up some juicy bad boys and ONLY EVER give them to him at the park.

1. Put him on lead

2. Wait until you encounter another dog he REALLY wants to play with (some distance away) and he is not paying attention/getting all mad

3. 'LEAVE' stern enough to make him jump, and if necessary tug lead FIRMLY

4. When his head turns to you IMMEDIATELY give small bit of sausage

Repeat

Eventually he associates 'LEAVE' with sausage, and then when he does it PRONTO take him off the lead and do it, and then when he has this down you can start giving the sausage every 3rd time you say leave, and eventually you won't need them at all

Hope that helps mate :good:

excellent, ill try that..only trouble is, i may snaffle the snags down myself before i get to the park....they're banned in our house...along with fags, white bread, salt etc etc ha ha ha..

seriously, cheers, ill try it.

Well then i suggest you use the dog as an excuse - go to the butchers and get some fine ones for yourself , and get some of sainsbury's basics for your furry friend :good:

in a pirex dish with a cm of water. full power for 5 mins. turn and another 5mins. take out of water and cool.

i chop long ways twice so the havelong quarters and then chop across so you have little wedges.

only problem i have is my cocker isnt intrested in eating when hes out, wouldnt thank you for it, all he want to do is xharge about. i dontlet him off the lead now. i think i need to get him sorted before giving him more freedom.
