New scope for .22-250

I currently have a Schmidt & Bender 8x56 on my Sako 75 and find it fine up to 200 yards but a little taxing on the eye over 200 yards. I've been told to stick with a 56mm scope for dawn til dusk performance, which i do a lot of, but is a 50mm scope really make that much differance? All vari power 56mm scopes only seem to go up to 10x which isn't a lot better than what i've got already apart from Nightforce/Swarovski top of the range that are 15x which seems ideal but out of my pruce range. Can any body reccommend a scope for up to 300 yard shots?

Many thanks

James

Have a look at IOR glass (the 4-14x50 illuminated would do you very well): IOR I have used IOR glass recently, and it's impressive and seriously robust stuff. Docter Optic and Kahles also make ******* good scopes. Zeiss Conquest may be worth a look, if you are happy with 1" tubes.

Personally I use a Zeiss 6-24x56 and an S&B 2.5-10x56 for foxing, having learnt the 'buy cheap, buy twice' maxim. I have been down the route of Leupold (VXL, VX-III and Mk4) and other Yank makes, and it only leads to disappointment. A Sako 75 is too fine a rifle to marr with sub-standard glass.

In answer to your x50/x56mm question, the added 6mm doesn't really make a discernible difference to my eyes. I know that 8x56 gives the optimum exit pupil, but the x50 is lighter, more svelte and sits closer to the bore line. The reticule and focal plane are more significant issues for 300-yard shots.

Take a look at the second-hand scopes on the websites for R M McLeod, York Guns etc.

Thanks for the advise much appreciated. Do you find the S&B 10x power enough on long shots? Are there any other websites that sell used high end rifle scopes? With shoots shutting down, keepers losing jobs and the credit crunch i'd expect more to be on the market.
