Power ranger
Hi, does anybody shoot many rats ? My next door neighbour has had a problem with rats in his back garden over the last week. I have shot 7 so far at 10 yards with RWS hollow points with good sucsess. Just wondering what pellets people use for ratting ? I shoot a .22 BSA ultra multishot and these pellets seem to be very consistent. I've shot a large female, 1 large male and 5 smaller rats so i'm hopeing its just one big happy family ! It may sound strange mentioning the sex and size but with a jestation period of 3-4 weeks and having 6-8 in a litter they could have a real problem ! My neighbours are retired so keep a vigulant watch out now and are very greatful for my help and think i'm UK's no.1 top shooter lol "what a permision, dont even need to leave the garden"

luckytrigger
Ive shot hundreds on my dairy farm permission and to be honest any dome pellet is lethal on rats at ranges between 5-30yds. I even killed two rats with one pellet last night i kid you not! First rat i hit in the head at 25yds with a .22 rws superdome the pellet passed through old ratties head and still had sufficient energy to kill a rat that must have been sat right next to it hitting it in the chest. Its the second time thats happened. Airrifle is a .22 hw97k sub 12ft lb i may add
bullet boy
Stick with the Hollow Points-they are accurate and devastating at close range!
durhampointer
im not a serious airgunner but i shoot around 400 rats and a hundred or so rabbits a year.i used rws superdomes for several years but now i use air arms diablo but both are good pellets.domed headed pellets work well and will kill a rat no poblem at any normal air-rifle range.its ok using hollow points etc at close range but your next shot might be 20 odd yards away or more. if you know how your gun and chosen pellet work at all ranges youll make good clean head shots. Carbonrocket
Good shooting there durham. I shoot rats, lots of them, and quite a few rabbits. I chose to go with AA roundheads as they give excellent accuracy with power (chrono proved for my Ultra). I used to shoot RWS Super Hollows when ratting with my Longbow but in my Ultra the AA's are better. Its been said many times before, some pellets are better for different rifles. Borrow a chrono and test them for power and accuracy. Saying that as long as you hit the vermin in the brain its going to heaven. durhampointer
I agree, theres alot of different guns and ammo out there to choose from but all you need to do is become a good enough shot to put that pellet into its brain. Just came back from a canny night,my mate took 20 using NV and i had 6 lamping and a few ferals earlier today.
luckytrigger
I went last night plenty about but some tough shots. Ended up with 9 confirmed and had a couple of 'runners'. All shot with the trusty .22 hw97k. Only had the gun a month and a half and shot 50 scalies already. The springer is definatley the cheapest option for shooting rats. Ive used 22lr/.410 hushpower shotgun/gas ram airrirfle and pcp airrifle but enjoy using a springer the most.
