Blunderbuss
I've just been to take a load of garden waste to the tip and on the spur of the moment called into a likely looking farm I passed on the way. Lots of rape and also newly drilled fields on lovely rolling countryside, with a few woodies about. At first I was getting negative vibes, as soon as the subject of pigeons was mentioned, a wry smile came across his face. The farmer was a young lad and said that he did all the pigeon shooting himself. He told me he knew all the farmers locally and that I'd be hard pushed to get anything, as they weren't keen on letting people they didn't know on their land (fair enough). I didn't push it and just ended up chatting with the guy about this and that for 15 minutes. I think the fact I was happy to chat even though there didn't seem to be any shooting in it for me and that I lived locally might have won him over a little. He took my phone number, filed under 'pigeons' in his mobile and even said at one stage, 'well I suppose it might save me putting some bangers in the fields'. He asked me if I was interested in helping out beating on their small farmers shoot in November - to which I answered 'yes' of course! He paid me the compliment of saying 'you come over a lot better than some of the clowns who call round here'. So although it's not quite a permission, it may turn into something and it's nice to to get a glimmer of encouragement after a load of knock backs!
