MerseaDavid
You should try to get out in the field and watch how the pigeons feed and where they like sitting. when set up on spring drillings you dont need as many decoys as you do on rape or something like that. Normally 10-15 will do nicely on drilling where on rape you really want a minimum of 20 because the more you get out the more they stand out + during winter that is what pigeons expect to see. Get yourself a couple of bouncers to set out in the field because these will move in the lightest of breezes and will stand out more from a longer distance. Also a set of lofting poles will help out alot during the winter when there is no leaves on the trees and having 2-3 decoys at the top of the tree will draw birds in quite well. always be aware of the wind direction because any slight change could change the way the birds come in. Dont always point ur decoys into the wind always point 1 or 2 in other direction to make it look more like a feeding flock.
MerseaDavid
A pigeon magnet will help but it is not important because aslong as you are under the flight line then you will get the birds. When it comes to decoys patterns there are many different ones you can use but the favourite one is the U shaped pattern (horse shoe) or a V shape like John Batley used that also worked well. During winter birds are more grouped together where as on spring drillings or harvested crops the birds are alot more spread out but if you spend the time to watch the birds you will notice this. buying some of the many shooting books or videos will help aswell. Books like Archie Coats pigeon shooting or Peter Theobald's the wood pigeon, they are both great books and help out alot. Videos like Peter Theobald's new pigeon shooting (druing winter and summer) or Jim Albones sporting gun video and red letter days video, these both show you how to set up decoy and where to look for the birds and when, what crops to check out etc.
