It depends what you shoot, and where you shoot it. In 243 I use 87 gr Hornady soft points for Roe north of the border, with 37gr N140.

That's not legal in England, but it does some damage. I thought about going lighter, but the bullet length it just right for my twist rate.

Sorry, I'm not being clear - I haven't chrono'd my load and it's that I refer to.

Depending on whether you read the vit data, or the hornady data, or a ballistics program, my load is either just under, or just over the legal limit. Acccording to vits latest data I'm somewhere around 1600ft/lbs, but Hornady think it's somewhere around 1750 ft/lbs.

It's not a hot load but it's very accurate, and very effective at the business end. In either case well over the requirements for Scotland.

So without chronoing it to know for certain I wouldn't shoot my homeloads south of the border for Roe. I could get it over the limit easily by changing head or powder, but I don't need to at the minute and it took a lot to get me to this point. If I went shooting in engalnd I'd just buy some off the shelf stuff.

Back to the OP.

Hornady say my powder range is 29.6 - 36.6

Vit say it's 35.2 - 40.1

So according to Hornady my load is max/very hot, acording to Vit it's low/mid range.

Over the last few years Vit have been gradually inceasing their max load for this set up e.g. in 2006 their max load was 38.3, and now it's 40.1.

Not at all helpful I wish they could all make their minds up.

Once I've used up all my N140 and RL15 I'm going to give N160 a try. I think N140 might be a bit quick burning, the N160 gives better performance and fills the case more than N140.

Might take a while to work through the tubs though - I don't do much target shooting, it mainly zero checking.

100grn Gameking bullet over 40grns of H414. Not the top load but very accurate.

If I load for fox I use Nosler 70grn V-max over 45grns of H414; again very accurate and only @ 1inch away from the 100grn bullet at 100yds.

I am using berger 95gr VLD , 43gr of N560 ,lapua brass and federal gold medal primers. it punches straight through foxs , and punches holes in rabbits about the size of a 10p piece. havnt used them on roe yet but i hope to change that soon

I have found the 87 gr Hornady BTHP to be an excellent all round load for foxes, mutjac and fallow. I use 45.5 gr of Viht 160, Norma cases and CCI 200 primers which gives 3,170 fps and half inch groups in my T3. Viht max for this load is 48.1gr of 160.

I've also found Hornady 95 gr SST's with 42.5 gr V160 = 2,970 fps and Sierra 100 gr BTSP with 36.0 gr IMR 4064 = 2,950 fps to be accurate through my rifle and very effective on deer.
