Bali
Hi I have a nice pair of Red deer antlers which were shed by the stag, anyone able to direct me to a site on the best way of mounting them. Most the info I have found is for mounting with the skull but theses are (not attatched to anything) if you get the picture. Also is it best to clean them with soapy water and do you then oil them or just let them dry natural. Any info greatly appreciated Nick
mark_mjs93
dont know about the cleanin/oiling thing, but here is an idea for mounting, drill a hole into the marrow of the antlers and glue a piece of Threaded Bar into the hole, makes sure you use a quality glue, and then drill a hole in the mounting board (the same size of the bar) then counter sink a hole in the back of the board deep enough and wide enough for a bolt, glue the right size bolt into the counter sink, and then thread your antlers onto the board,(this should be simple enough) for that extra bit of class, you can always counter sink a hole exactly the same diameter of the antler base and then when you screw the antlers onto the board it should sit in the hole and look rather good... this is just an idea, as i have never mounted, but i think it should work.... if i can get hold of a pair ill make a picture tutorial... Bali
Thanks for that Mark I wasnt sure if the marrow part would be solid enough to hold a threaded bolt but I get what you mean.My mate is cutting a slice off an oak tree he felled a couple of years ago that will make a nice mount varnished up. What I might do is lay them along the wall held up by leather straps one each side thanks again Nick Edited May 26, 2009 by Bali
