Horrocks
I've begun shooting bunnies with my CZ varmint in .17 now, after becoming very happy with the rifles accuracy though the shooting of alot of paper. I've been shooting at reasonably close range, 75 yards ish, as i become used to the rifle i'll push this out, i may get a better scope, for the low light. The ground i shoot is reasonably open, which helps with the sound, which i have begun to feel is pretty negligible anyway, the rifle and the round is superb, accurate and a fantastic bunny stopper, they just fall over. my main concern was the rabbits taking fright at the sound, but they dont, i actually feel they take more notice of a .22, it has that loud thump as it hits flesh, that seems absent from the .17, i shot over an open field and i just picked them off, 5 (with longish gaps to let them relax) before all those that were left were inoppurtune shots, on each one they didnt register that thump, and the rabbits didnt seem to care at all. The damage the round did was a shock though. a rabbit i shot from behind had simply no lower jaw, just a lolling tongue, and another a gaping hole in its head, and no eyes. So, the arguement is that the sound scares the bunnies, it doesnt, and without the thump of a .22 rimmy on the .17, they seem to care far less than they do with the subsonic round. Admiral Von Tirpitz
I would share your view, they seem to just sit there after a rabbit near by has been dropped, perhaps they do hear something, but dont know where the sound comes from. A year on my 17 still amazes me on how accurate it is and what amazing ranges it stays on a straight line for targeting. The ballistic tip rounds do also cause massive impact damage, which I think is better than .22 which often just goes through things. Also got an XM3 bi pod which works a treat on the open field where no natural rest is available.
miroku4399
I have used mine to shoot rabbits on a golf course at night which was still and when they were on the driving range even after i shot one the others just sat there so it was easy, i have used the 22 on the same golf course and shot nowhere near the same amount of rabbits. Best tally was 37 in 2 1/2hrs. Then went back 2 nights later to bag another 19.

Ive had a few times when ive dropped over five or so, and walked out to pick them up, to have rabbits go in all directions from where theyve not moved, this is unseen with the .22, im sure its that loud thud when the .22 hits flesh thats absent from the .17,
