wood lathes

Axminster are a good make. I have 2.

The AWSL is fine, but you will be limited to small bowls etc as there is not much clearence over the bed. The advice I was given years ago was to buy a big lathe, as you can turn small items on a big lathe, but you wont turn a large item on a small lathe etc.

Are you intending to turn anything in particular?

Can I throw 'Record' Lathes into the ring. I have the small 36" swivel head version and has never missed a beat. Lots of cast iron.

Cost me £200 but had a free full set of tools and a turning book. The lathe prices stay the same but they are very good at adding value.

My other suggestion is visiting a tool show - don't know where in the world you are but the Harrogate one in November is an Aladdin's cave AND you can touch them and sometimes even have a go.
