  1. An air rifle is very handy around farm buildings and its quite surprising how the ferals often ignore the noise of the shot.

    Hi Cranfield

You're right, the air rifle does a good job and I also have the Hushpower 410 which does not spook them either.

However, I always wait until the cattle are out before I get too close to the sheds. The sound of the shots might not bother

them much either but why risk upsetting the farmer?

  2. nice one mate . the gun is that one of the new mossberg auto

It is the Midland S/A. A good cheap gun but it is quite fussy about what you feed it with.

To recycle effectively they need to be 30 gr or heavier. Also 65 mm shells have a habit of

both coming out of the magazine together and jamming. 70mm works fine.

I thought some of you might be interested in my outing last Saturday.

One of my permissions has quite a few ferals around the farm buildings and the farmer asked if I could do something about them.

As he keeps cattle in the sheds over the winter, options are a bit limited just now.

However, he has just drilled the field behind the steading (one of the very few that have been done around here) so I thought I would give it a go with a few decoys.

I put 12 out on the drillings, in sight of the farm buildings but a fair bit up the hill so the noise would not be too bad. Over two hours I got 31 ferals, (there is one missing from the photo) and a Jackdaw.

He was quite pleased but there are still a few left so I will have another bash at them when I get the chance.

  4. For Mossy835 and anyone else who is interested.

"Does the Midland semi auto cycle 28g cartridges?" Yes but very poorly.

I went out on Sunday but we had gale force winds up here and no grain has been cut on any of my permissions yet.

To get a shot and try to answer the above question I put out the magnet and a dozen shell decoys on a recently cut silage field next to a small clump of trees.

Action was not thick and fast but I did manage 12 ferals in a couple of hours. This could have been a good few more if the second shell hadn't managed to stick every other time. On a few occassions I got off two shots and once I even got all three but more often than not there was a jam.

Having previously used the 32g shells, there was no problems at all.

From this experience, I have had the age old lesson reinforced - Always feed your gun with what it likes. From now on, the 28's will be kept for my Browning o/u.

If you want a gun for light loads, don't buy the Midland.

  5. I bought one a couple of weeks ago as a "knock about" gun and have used it a couple of times so far.

I really like it. This is the first semi I have had but am quite impressed.

As to the 28 grams, I cannot answer that one as the stock of cartridges I have are 32 gram sixes. They cycle fine but are nearly finished.

I have just bought some 28 grams and will be trying them out this weekend, weather permiting.

  6. It's the Stoat for me.

I was once standing in a farm yard when I heard a terrible screaming.

Round the corner came a big rat with a stoat behind it.

They ran round in circles for a few minutes (seemed like a long time but probably wasn't). This was a few feet away from me. The stoat then jumped on the rat's back and I heard the bones breaking in its neck.

The stoat then dragged it away, totally ignoring me. The rat must have been at least three rimes the length of the stoat.

p.s. I had no gun or camera either.

  7. I have a 2002 Freelander 1.8 GS. Would have preferred the TD but the price was within what I wanted to spend.

Used to have a Tata Safari 2 litre Diesel. Very basic but a good reliable motor.

  8. I have never seen one swimming but I remember a story I once heard.

If a fox has a lot of fleas they have been known to take a mouthful of grass in their mouth and submerge in water.

With the tip of the nose above the surface, the fleas crawl up to the grass. The fox then lets go and comes out of the water.

I don't know how true this is but we all know that they can be pretty smart so it is quite possible.
