  1. After a few blank outings I finally managed to christen the new .308 this morning, a munty doe from a high seat overlooking a large block of cover crop maize at about 75yds and then I had a stalk through a small wood where about 80 reds have been making a right mess and managed to get a spiker stag at about 150yds as he walked between two trees.

after reading a couple of threads on here lately about calibers and bullets and deer running on, both were shot with 168gn A-max which put them both down where they stood with heart/lung shots, good exit wounds on both and both hearts and lungs turned to soup but no real damage to any meat, I will be sticking to these I think, if either animal has run off there was enough blood to follow.

  2. cheers guys, in the end we chose the bunbury arms at great barton, not a bad pub but dead for a saturday night, there's no chance i was going to tell anyone on here where or when i was meeting her, too many blokes on here just like me and i know what i'd have done if i'd known, as it turned out we had a fantastic evening and got on well for a blind date, and get my luck, she's right into country sports, shooting, fox hunting, and even stag hunting and to top it off she was a stunner and wants to meet up again

  4. ive just re-joined this year after a couple of years out, Ive been a member previously for about 15 years, 1st yaer costs £165 inc £10 joining fee, got about 4000 acres of marsh and about 4 miles of river front with no really silly rules, 6 days a week shooting on most marshes and some with 3-4 days

  5. a keeper friend of mine asked if i would help him lamp some cubs he had spotted, we met up at 10.00pm and headed off out, by 2,30 we pulled back into his drive with 5 of the little creatures in the back of the truck, the .243 with 95gn hollow points certainly doesnt take any prisoners and the pics are a bit to graphic to be posted on here, but a good job well done

the evening was soured a bit when i found two spiker red stags laying dead in the road on the way home, i assume and hope it was a wagon that hit them because by the amount of bits of plastic and glass in the road if a car had hit them someone would be dead

  6. Nice Tench :good:

My PB is only 5lb

There's a pit near me that the Carp boys fish quite often, they get the Bream move in on there baited area and the muppets chuck them in the canal just a few yards behind them, thats if the fish are lucky, if there not they get dumped in the bushes. I despise that type of attitude from fishermen,. In my opinion they should have there tackle removed, and not just rods reels ect. If your fishing then you should be thankfull for the fish you catch whatever the species.

Please dont take my comments as a knock at you though Mikee.

What a cracking tench! What did you use for bait?

I was talking to someone who didn't like the bream when fishing for carp who said he would just "bump off" any bream that took the bait, I nearly strangled the ****** when he explained this meant over striking to tear the hook from the breams mouth

I caught them on home made fishmeal boilies, I do get peed of with catching them when i'm carp fishing but I reel them in and unhook and release just like any other fish, the carp swim with the bream in this lake so the best way to catch the carp is to attract some bream and just keep hoping the next run isnt a bream

  7. As we dont have many bream up here I'm just wondering why you dont want to catch them especially if they're 8lbs ???

    Nice tench :good:

if i was fishing for them i would be over the moon, but when I spend ages trying to get a bait in the right spot for mr carp and one of them things eats it, it becomesa pain in the end, there a very few but very large carp in the lake and the bream never give them time to find the bait

  9. i suspect this is not a chroned 2950 as taking the middle ground of 4 1/2 " low at 200 seems to great a drop from a 150 zero. ok a lot depends on the setup but for the bullet traveling at a mv of 2950 thats a heck of a lot of drop over 50 yds. at 150 a 100yds zero is only going to be around 1" low remember and will only drop another 2" or so- your doubling or more the drop that would be expected. I should chrono these rounds mate they might not even be deer legal

Hey guys the thing is drop don't mean a whole heap when you consider that a full value 10mph gust is going to move .243" bullets near enough 5" sideways, so even a mere 5mph gust is gonna move you near as makes no matter as your 200 drop and a more usual highland breeze of 15-20mph is going to push that pill sideways 7- 10" . Of course thats all fine untill you factor in uplift from ground rising and wind chaneling etc, etc. The only way to learn all this is get out and shoot in those conditions, theorising and guesswork is all well and good but tends to make you look a fool out in the field

hey before anyone talks balistic programs these are off the top of my head SWAG calcs based on unknown bullet etc. but i bet they aren't far out :good:

You had me worried so I have revisited my range book and now realise I gave some incorrect information in my original post, 100yd zero gives just over 3" drop at 200yds the almost 13 inches at 300yds is still right though, the 2950fps velocity is taken from the powder bottle, i ahve checked the manufacturers data and some reloading test data and these were tested with a longer barrel than I have so I would guess mine are doing a bit over 2800, they certainly kill everything I shoot them at

  10. I use mec 600jr's for 2.75 and 3" shells and a mec steel master for 3.5" or 10bore stuff, mec single stage presses are the best reloaders on the market for reloading steel, progressive machines are a waste of time for this, brilliant for big batches clay or game shells but useless for this application.

steel is funny stuff to work with but once youve sussed it out its the best shot material apart from heavy shot which is too expensive to consider really, its speed that kills with steel shot, I used to try and cram as much as i could in a case but it just wont work, light fast loads are the way forward 24-25g in a 70mm case 33-34g in a 76mm, 89mm are a waste of time in 12g unless its big shot for geese, BBB or T, If you think you will be mostly shooting geese get a 10g and load 42-43g of T, they wot know what hit em

  11. over the last couple of years ive shot about 30 muntjac and about 20 roe most of which dropped where they were standing but 3 or 4 have legged it off, I think when they are spooked they are more likely to run but they never seem to get more than 20-30yds but that is enough if the cover is thick, one roe doe did make about 80yds with no heart and only one lung, amazing really.

I shoot all my deer through the heart/lungs from 10 to 250yds and never bleed any of them, as soon as they are shot I do a full gralloch and remove everthing from the bum hole to the chin, in the warmer months get them straight back to the motor and in a large tray and covered with a wet sheet and either return and try for another or head off home, this is generally early in the day before the sun has heated the car, when its cold i just hang them up in the wood if i'm going to stay on, never had a problem with any of the meat being tainted
