  1. Hmm, it wasnt a Maxxus then because it was an O/U lol. I only remember the look of the gun and it was a browning so I thought it may have been that one. Ah well, I can talk to the guy who is a keen shotgun shooter and ask him for some pointers. Cheers guys, Tom.
  2. Cheers for all the replied guys. I have quite a small frame at around 5'3 and I have only ever shot a (and dont quote me on this) a Browning Maxxus 26" I think as it was a club gun on a clay shooting day. I could probably stretch to around £400 or around there. I said I was gonna get a £300 airgun and ended up spending £950 with the pump etc... So we shall see. I will bear the name Lanber in mind. And Jega, A guy who I work with is a regular member there and he said he will take me this weekend or next week sometime to have a go with his 'Kentucky' rifle and some of his shottys. Can't wait, should be great fun. Cheers guys, ATB, Tom.
  3. Hey guys, Looking to apply for my licence. But, before I do, I want to be looking at guns and their prices. Does anyone know any good 12G shotguns for the beginner with a reasonable price (looking to buy second hand)? It will mostly be used for targets and clays, but if I get a permission I would like it to be able to shoot over land. Basically I'm looking for a decent all rounder with a reasonable price. And its nothing serious I just want to know peoples opinions on which guns are good for starters. Thanks guys and ATB, Tom.
  4. Thanks to all that posted. I usually see a guy on a tractor early mornings around 6:30am and hes usually cutting the same piece of grass so I guess he works to a schedule. I'll find out when he arrives and coincidentially try and turn up at the same time and ask if he needs any help with a shooting card in my pocket. I know he sees the rabbits as they are always there on the field not far from him and his tractor. And thanks the the adivce guys... Cards... chest. Got it! Cheers , Tom.
  5. where abouts in Grimsby are you mate? I'm from Cleethorpes. I'm looking for shooting too, If I get any luck I'll let you know.
  6. Well... The permissions I was hoping to be given permissions no longer want a shooter. So now I think I'm going to try the local golf courses. I pass the Cleethorpes golf club every day on the way to work and it is absoloutely teaming with rabbits. I think I'm going to go in and ask if I can offer them my services pest controlling in return for some free advertising. As I'm pretty handy on the computer (photoshop and the likes...), I think I can do them some A6, A5 and A4 sized posters and then put them arround town in shop windows and notice boards etc. I suppose anything in return is great. Especially when it's free!? So what do you think? I'm not going to give up until I get my permissions. And just a question, Should I ask for the Greenkeeper or the manager? I want to make sure I get direct contact with the right person. If anyone else has any tips or has permission on a golf course and can tell me some good advice please post here or send me a PM. Cheers and ATB, Tom.
  7. Air rifles Only zip, But I get the idea. Thanks. And will do bakerboy.
  8. very true... I should hear in the next couple of days about the permissions. Strange how small things just lead you in the right direction. Right place at the right time I guess... Tom.
  9. Finally after a year of trying and been rejected 9 times. I've 98% got 3 Yes thats THREE new permissions! I made some shooting cards and while showing somone at work, another guy over saw and asked if he could take one for himself as he has a pigeon problem. Ofcourse I jumped at the chance. I fetched one from my draw and he asked if he could have 4 more as he knows farmers who are having problems with pigeons too! So please to finally be on the way. To all who are trying, DONT GIVE UP HOPE. I'll let you all know how It gets on, Cheers, Tom.
  10. Thanks for that ack-ack. I'll be sure to do that. I'm thinking now the easiest way of getting to know a little more is to join a club. I might just have to pop round to the local club and get a membership:P That way I may even be able to tag along and then who knows, I may get a permission of my own.
  11. Ok. And when you mean every door? How do I know which houses live a farmer? And like I said, I'd be weiry(sorry for spelling) walking across someones land to get to a farmhouse.
  12. Cheers all. I'm sure if my neighbors saw it they wouldn't be telling me well done. But then again they didn't, and they aren't all as like minded as most of us on here.
  13. Ok, I've got my cards and more importantly i've got my gun, insurance etc. I've decided that to start looking for permission, I'm going to try and ask for shooting inside barns and farm buildings. That is where the air rifle will come into its own. Then hopefully if I can get the permission in the buildings, I may be able to gain permission over the land and apply for a SGC/FAC and get a gun to be able to control the land. What do you think? Any tips for me in the asking department? I'm still a bit unsure about walking onto a complete strangers land asking for some shooting permission. Any tips would be greatly appreciated on how to actually ask. Thanks, Tom.
  14. The only thing i've tried is to let the dogs out, but they are so used to the chickens and the rabbits they don't even bother the woodies. We tried netting the area off but the chickens destroy the nets when they 'fly' around. There is no other way to resolve this that isn't any more cost saving or less time consuming. Shooting them just seems so much easier/cheaper and the most efficient way. Thanks for the reply, Tom.
  15. Before you ask, Yes I have read them. But having a little debate with myself whether what I want to do falls in with the licences. I live in town and I have a fairly big garden for a town house (about 1/5th of an acre) and I own 8 chickens and 4 rabbits which live at the bottom of the garden. My question is, Does shooting pigeons in my garden fall into the category of protecting wild birds or foodstuffs for wild birds. The trouble I have, is that when we let the chickens out to roam the garden, there always ends up being a team of woodies eating all the corn in the chicken feeder. The licence says about 'protecting foodstuffs for wild birds' but im still not sure and don't want to be doing something illegal. It's just annoying having to keep buying more feed when it seems to to the woodies as they get fatter and fatter and always are comming back for more. What is your oppinion? Thanks guys, Tom.
  16. Cheers Steve, Don't get me wrong I love birds and I love nature... I just love Magpies slightly less than the rest of nature... ... If that makes any sence.
  17. Thanks ste12b, The grip needs a clean, you can see the dirt compared to the rest of the stock. When I saw it, I had to have the deluxe stock finish . Not practical, but nice...
  18. The other day while sat in my back garden target shooting at 25 yards, Just finished zeroing as I do before I start targeting every time, and as I'm putting a few drops of pellet lube into my tin of .22 H&N Field Target Trophys, I'm appriciating a lovely small Chaffinch in our Cherry tree, the trunk of which, is where my target board backstop is rested up against. Next thing I know, a Maggie swoops the poor little thing off a branch and on the floor directly infront of my target board. Before I even think about it - and here's where i'll get the lecture about letting nature take its course, - I've got my Hawke 3-9X50 HD IR Mil dot perfectly sighted on it's head, just behind the eye. And with a swift THWACK, the Chaffinch flutters its self free and the Maggie goes down in one, without a fuss. The end result, one more beautiful small perching bird to sing its song, and one big bully to no more SQUARK in my yard. Observe if you may... Cheers guys, Tom.
  19. I've shot an o/u shotgun with 24 and 28g cartridges. Now i've had a response to my question, I realised that the question I was looking to ask was about the different rifles, i.e centerfire and rimfire etc, and what rounds you would use for certain quarry. I know I wouldn't want to be shooting a pigeon with a .270 winchester, but it's more about the uses of the more commonly used guns I was wondering about.
  20. Thanks a lot for that. Thats really been helpful. Nice to know there are people out there who will take the time to teach. Thanks again!
  21. I knew that a .17hmr was a round, but I thought the rifle which fires the round is different to a rifle that fires a .22lr.
  22. Ok. So I'f I was to get permission on a farm and needed a gun to control pigeons and crows etc, would I need a shotgun or a firearm certificate to allow me to get the correct gun for the job. Cheers, Tom.
  23. I posted this in guns and equipment but I think it is more suited to this part of the forum so I'll repost here for a better response. 'Hi guys, I know this will sound a very stupid question to most, but i've never heard the answer so I still don't know. What are the different types of guns and what are the uses of them. For example what makes a rimfire different to others? what's a 17hmr??? What is a .22LR. I've heard these terms before but never been explained to what guns they refer to and what they are used for. I've also heard people say things like... 'the land was suitable for a 17hmr but not a...', why is this? Also what's the difference between different types of shotgun and what's the advantages/disadvantages of them compared to rifles? Sorry to be asking these types of questions, but if I don't ask then I will never know. I'm sure i'll get some telling me to search google etc, but there's nothing which compares to real people who know what they are talking about. Cheers guys, Tom' Hope someone can help Thanks again, Tom.
