  1. he is a pleasure to be with and settled in great,i am off out on sunday but not going to shoot myself, just going to spend all my time with the dog while two others shoot. shame cos ive just bought myself a new left hand 6 shot i want to try out. with a tennis ball he will carry this around all day, retrieve all day and not get tired of it,shame birds and rabbits were not round.
  2. working dog,is the key here. he has settled in but still a little grumpy at times. we seem to have bonded well and he is responding well to all commands. the thing with me is....im no dog trainer so i think the pair of us are going to learn together.
  3. just a little update. took the dog out today, noticed that he seemed to know what was what,a quick walk in the fields with my mate shooting ahead of us. dog not bothered in the least and wanting to see what was going on. slowly upto the gun......dog in sit possision,bang.....and it was great to see him look at me as if to say can i go then?. the next shot i took, dog by my side, dropped a rabbit about 40 yards,he looked at me again, this time i thought i would chance him.... straight to the rabbit, picked up and then straight back to me....dropped at my feet and sat down next to me for a praise. i was amazed, sent him for five in total, with 3 retrieved perfect and 2 left half way back. very happy so far but then it could all change next time.
  4. well thanks lads, read a little and had him out. soft mouthed as they said......100% on retrieve. no loud bangs that bother him, going on thursday to see what hes like with distant guns.
  5. cheers for that......banging already, seems not to be bothered by any loud bangs, will let him settle in and get used to me for a week or two then will take him out.
  6. north east,a little too far from you i might think?.
  7. i have just got a 23 month old black lab,it flushes and retrieves (dont know how well yet). the chap who had him took ill and he went to a re-homing centre, but was only there overnight as we spotted him quickly. now i need all the help and advice from everyone i can,i need to know how to get him onto the gun?. is there anywhere with good tips etc on the net as i cant find anywhere. been onto the kennel club for his pedigree (not that bothered) etc. i understand they are quick to learn but i also need to learn with him......where do i begin?. i can take him with me to work and most of the time i can make it one to one with him,the shops quiet this time of year. please help me to get it right. cheers brooke
  8. surfs are imports, ours was a 2.4 td......as i said a bit thirsty,i managed aroung 20 mpg,but then again i have a heavy right foot. the wife loved it and the only reason its now gone is that we had no more use for it.shame realy as she now drives a honda.
  9. wife had hilux surf for a year,no problem at all.....just a bit heavy on the fuel. i have just parted with my nissan terrano 2,not one single problem, great on fuel, will pull anything and over the rough stuff and deep mud....fantastic. i never got stuck anywhere i went and some of the land i go on is bad.... after all that....go for what you like, not for what your mates like.
  10. not a lot of pigeon around at the minute,im just bunny bashing with gun and ferrets. im keeping an eye out for when they start again,i have a farm with beans going in at the back end of feb,if you have nothing sorted by then let me know and i will see if i can swing it for an extra gun for a few days shooting. i know its hard to get that first farm etc but when you do (and you will if you try hard) you will find that more follows.
  11. replied...........thanks
  12. just that quick,a slip and then a bolt......no time to think. looks like i have to use the escort or the browning for now. gutted and stupid.
  13. while out today i dropped my gun. never checked it and shot a bolting rabbit. dirt in the end and i have put a large bubble in the end of it.... anyone got a barrel..........26inch preferred.
  14. with such a good day last time,we decided to do it again. this time at an old slate quary i have. bad...bad move,4 ferrets all in the slate and rocks,on a plus side we bolted 13,and shot ten. bad point is we managed to lose a mk3 collar. this was located ten feet down under a huge pile of slate, now we need a new one cos only an idiot would have tried to dig it out. next time we will make sure that the collar is tighter before rushing in. oh and we got a bonus pheasant. the moral to this is.......check it then check it again...................then check it again to make sure. but still enjoyed it in the wind and rain.
  15. this place has one more that shoots it......he likes to crow shoot, but someone has been poaching it ...... all the daft ****** has to do is ask and he will get on as the farmer keeps live stock and they are damaging themselves with all the holes,it looks like they are shooting from the road and leaving all the rabbits where they fall..(shame).... all in all not a bad day and just had a ferret given that followed an old woman home...Honest. its all skin and bone and looks like its been out for a few weeks but we will see if hes a worker after we get him back to normal... now back to work tomorrow then off sea fishing on sunday.....its a hard life eh...
  16. i like many have enjoyed a day out with the ferrets, but today we took the shotguns instead of nets. i have quite a lot of land and a good lump has rabbits all over. we got there for 10am this morning with 3 ferrets. the first set was huge and after an hour we had 13 rabbits at our feet. my mate saw some rabbits run into a set half way down the bank(everest is smaller),we got there to see 3 holes,i did not know that such sets were around,10 minutes and nine rabbits. ok we missed a few but we ended the day on around 30 big bunnies. a great day........
  17. all works.................listen and learn with these guys. last year at this time i had no land, now i have loads , only today (without saying anything) i gained another 250 thousand acres. i love the nice farmers.
  18. will just have to wait until monday now. at least we only wait a day or so until we get our cert back, durham have been fantastic with the speed they get things done.
  19. i have 3 shotguns(one semi and one over/under)........1 multishot shotgun,1 bolt action .22,1 .17hmr bolt action and lastly the semi auto .22. never thought i would have to do it all again just to change a gun.
  20. can i not just swap them at the shop?
  21. i have had a .22 semi on my cert for a while now..... the one i have ...I HATE. i have seen a few new ones i like the look of...BUT ........ can i just part x mine or do i need a variation on my cert?. i am only allowed one semi (as well as all my other bolt action ones),but can it be just a simple trade in?. i take mine to the shop...p.x. it against the other .....then i still only have one on my cert.....or is it another variation?. cheers brooke
  22. dont worry....your trying too hard. last week i had nothing at all, this week i have eight farms ,three of them have a total of over seventeen mile of land between them. i live in county durham, knocked on doors ,wrote letters , emailed them and pestered everyone. out of the blue i started to get calls , i now shoot most nights after work and sundays. most of my land is for rabbits ,two farmers will allow pigeon and crows so i have a bonus. but most of all.....DONT give up.
