  1. I have been shooting rabbits now for more years than I care to remember, obviously I take only what I need for my table and sort it all out myself.

Just wondered if anyone else who actively hunts rabbit keeps them as pets like I do? Not sure why, I love the little things.

I have a white English called Shearer and a black Dutch called Owen (can you tell I am a Newcastle fan?). They are house rabbits, free run of the place. Once they settle and get used to the house they really develop strong personalities and are brazenly cheeky, nicking stuff and hiding it and pinching food off your plate if you turn your back.

Now I want ferrets too, but not sure they would be compatable pets (I'd want the ferrets to come in an play sometimes, probably cruel for them to be able to see or smell the rabbits.)

  2. I quite fancy doing a pigeon tangeen (morrocan type cookery). It a pot with the conical lid heated underneath on coals....

Made with tomatoes, onions, peppers, apricots, smoked paprika and cinnamon sticks a bit of cumin and finished off with some fresh corriander.

Served on a nice best of saffron rice with a quick swirl of cream.

Spot on idea mate. Was out getting dragged shop to shop one day by Mrs Pin, but spotted this fella, might be the cheapest tageen available. They also do this little chap which may assist.

Not sure Lancs lad needs the cookery book though, that sounds delicious mate

  3. Already been mentioned but as with just about all meat / poultry if you want it succulent then cook it, let it rest - covered, in a warm oven or sheilded from the brunt of the heat with some foil in the pan. The trick is to allow it to continue to cook a little but without drying out.

Most meat / whatever continues to cook when off the heat so I tend to take it off before its done and allow to rest. The biggest mistake people make is to assume that once the main heat is off the cooking process is over. That or they try and finish the cooking in the pan which almost always results in tough overcooked meat.

  4. Get it, see how you get on with it and take it from there.

You can always send it to Ben to have the reg fitted later on.

I use mine a lot and don't find the lack of shots and the curve a problem really, but I know how much better it will be once done and it will get done at some point, just not in a rush

  5. 50yds is a good rule of thumb, but it really depends on the load and the quarry as what the best effective range is.

My personal opinion is that you need to be sure that its a humane one shot kill whatever you are shooting at, and this means going nowhere near anything like the max (whatever the weapon).

I'd much rather not shoot at the borderline bird/rabbit/whatever and wait for the next one that I know for sure is in range.

  6. Privilege were best for me, brand new A4 2.0 S-line TDI £345 (bloody good price for insurance in London). Only of use with 4 or more years NCB. If you have none try bell.co.uk. If any of you have seen the low rent advert with the bloke in the orange shirt, thats my mate Simon. Actor, lol

Another tactic is play brokers off against each other, or look for deals where you get a discount for having home / contents with the same people (Norwich Union etc).

  7. 24p seems about the norm in and around the London area for comparable targets and facilities.

There was a comment that the quailty / facilities tails off the further north you go but I would say thats not at all true really. Lord Geordie will probably comment here too but Steve Smith's in Dinnington (just outside Newcastle) has the latest kit (automatics / angles with counters) a gunshop on site and great layouts etc and thats a damn load cheaper than I pay down here :good:

    Broomhills is 24p/clay non members

Ractory Farm clayshoot is the same (£12/50)

A1 shooting grounds the same again

At my club though we charge £10 for 100 bird sporting (£15 guests) and we have a good range of targets, bowmans automatics, rabbits and a tower etc. By far the best shooting I can find anywhere round here though oddly we struggle for numbers and only shoot bi-weekly at the moment :good:

  8. I have had a TDR now for about 9 months and I have to say I love it. I have thought about getting it regulated because it really does have a nasty power-curve and a small cylinder. Expensive but Ben is widely regarded as the best out there and you can't nock qaulity like that.

I find with mine when filled to 190bar it is a bit wild for the first dozen or so shots, then I get about 40 bang on the money, from there it varies (I guess on how fast I filled it and the conditions at the time).

Accuracy wise it is stunning, off the bipod I can't tell the difference between that and a 410 carbine my mate has.

I strongly considered the regulator and it was purely a financial thing that I didn't do it yet (new car).

If you have to have it break down [ I did at the time ] then I can't fault it. If you don't need that then I would certainly plum for the carbine. Larger capacity for starters, and you could convert to FAC if you ever wanted to later on (not really a sensible option with the TDR for capacity reasons).

  9. The article suggests that the case will be heard in September. I too sent a letter of support.

At one time you could expect fairness and careful judgement from the police. These days I expect nothing but attitude and rudeness. My father is a retired officer and I have talked with him about similar situations many times, it is interesting to note he shares my own views and gives this kind of thing as a reason for no longer being an officer.

A few weeks ago I got stopped when coming back from a shoot and all I got was attitude, animosity and cheek from a 21 year old copper so wet behind the ears it just wasn't true. It was all I could do to bite my tounge and literally take a load of sh*& off this kid and his mate, spoiling for an argument and a reason to make something of the fact I had guns, shells and knives in the car.

I drove off having done nothing wrong feeling for a second like I had got away with something, until that turned to seething anger for how badly I had been treated.

I hope these ladies win and sue for every single penny they can get, seems every decision these days is based on money, perhaps this is the only way to get the message across?

  10. Silicon crystals can draw the moisture out of the wood and make it split.

If theyre in sachets and at the bottom of the bag in reasonable quantities, I cant see why it should do that. As long as the wood has a thin layer of oil over it its not going to gain or lose any moisture anyway. I think to keep on the safe side dont put any silicon crystals in contact with the wood, but in a gun-bag I would say its a good idea to have them at the bottom or sides.

    -Andrew

I still wouldn't do that if I were you. If you are concerned then get hold of some vp90 corrosion inhibiter. Napier make packs which inside a case / slip / cabinet will protect your gun and not dry out the stock.

Check the link for proof that silica gel isn't what you want :good:

  11. A good few years ago now was plinking in my mates garden with my then brand new and shiny BSA Superstar (lovelly under-barrel cocking rotating breach loader some of you may remember). Smiffy was a bit of a weedy lad as I remember and had some problems cocking the gun. Oh dear.

I wandered off to get a drink off his mum and came back to find smiffy missing a small section of his chin, clarret all over the place and the gun on the floor with a bent cocking lever :good: After sorting him out I worked out what he'd done - he'd only turned the gun round, butt on the deck and with both hands tried to cock the thing by pulling down the lever towards him over handed style.

To this day I don't know how it actually happened that the lever came back up and smacked him on the chin on the way up, he says he doesn't remember either but he's still got the scar on his chin to remind him to not do that again.

I couldn't afford to fix the rifle and it got left like that up until recently I found it in my folks loft. I have ordered a new cocking lever and catch and intend fixing it, I loved that gun :good:

  12. Just read that back, no I don't work for them, get a commission or anything like that.

There are loads of other shooting grounds near where I live, this one is just that bit better :good:

I think 24p/clay is about normal for around London, A1 shooting ground charge the same thing but don't have th e number of stands or variation - though they are a very friendly place and have nice food and drink all the time. There is rectoryfarm shoot, but that only runs Wed & Sunday each week and they only have 5 stands (they vary it regulary and shoot around the targets on the Wed - but compared to others it is limited).

My club at London Colney run the best stuff in the area, different challenging targets every single time, 15/100 bird to non members and they have the latest radio controlled traps, a tower and round the clock permission to shoot.

Come on, must be some of you out there fancy a bit of friendly competition? :good:

  13. Hi All,

New to the forum and new to shooting, but addicted in a big way! :good:

Anyone within striking distance of Broomhills shooting ground fancy meeting up for a shoot at some point?

Great place, with 10 stands of challenging English sporting targets. Driven from some seriously high towers, rabbits and some nice challenging teals. Only shot there twice, but it really is a nice place to shoot, would be ideal to meet up one Saturday morning early doors. Prices are about average given the location but the equipment is top notch and there is plenty of variation in a really nice woodland setting. Well stocked shop for anyone needing shells etc.

Realy easy to get to just off the M1, check the link for more details.

So, anyone close enough fancy a meet up one Saturday for a bit of friendly shooting?
