  1. Phoned a guy about a shotgun tonight, ended up buying it and a BSA Sportsman 5 for much cheapness indeed. I need to give them both some TLC and elbow grease which I will enjoy doing. The shotgun is an old Francais D Armes Robust No26 12 bore 2 1/2" chamber which I can't find much info on. Here's some pics: The shotgun used to have some sort of cheek piece fitted to the stock ! She's a wee bit rusty too
  2. Thought I would share this, tried two different 40gr subsonic HP rounds in my Sako Finnfire Varmint. Winchester on left Eley on right at 25m Now at 50m, the rifle moved for the bottom left shot on the Eleys so I discounted that shot. Group size at 50m was 21mm for Winchester and 16mm for Eley.

  4. Well chuffed.Got the two certificates through the door today. Shotgun cert and FAC for two .22 rf + mods and a .17 + mod. 500 to hold and 400 to buy on each calibre. Trying to track down the person selling the Sako Finnfire as I'm hoping for a good deal, if not its a Silhouette or Style from the RFD. Will look for a second hand cheap and cheerful 12g to tide me over the next few months also. The .17 can wait a wee while.
  5. My FAC and SGC will arrive shortly ( I hope ). Now I just need to make sure I know what I'm doing as I may not be making the first purchase from a RFD who would have kept me right on the paperwork. I gather I take my certificate with me, buy the gun and then inform the FAO within seven days. Does the seller need to do anything ?
  6. I used RWS Target Rifle 40gr in the Finnfire, I see you use Winchester Subsonics (HP) ?

Have you tried others and settled on the Winchesters ? Trying to cut down my own testing costs :)

  7. Well see, I was at the club on Saturday when I found out it was for sale so went back on Sunday to see it. I ended up putting 40 rounds through it, some at 25m and then 50m all off the bipod. I then shot a card for the winter postal to estimate what division I will be shooting in, hopefully with this rifle 25m 50m 50m needs work The beauty
  8. Thanks ye kindly lads. I will be using it at the range for the winter postal LSR competition but no doubt also on the rabbits Would consider cutting the barrel down in the future but will have to have a good think about it. I may start off at £400 to see what he says.
  9. I may be buying a Sako Finnfire P94s .22lr Varmint MT from my club. It's in good nick and comes with a Tasco Silver Antler 3-9x40 scope and two magazines. No idea how old it is, although I know they have been superseded by the quad. I was shooting it today and really like the feel and accuracy. Going back to make an offer and was thinking £350-£400. Anyone care to suggest if this is a fair price ? Oh, and what does the MT stand for ? The front of the manual has non MT versions listed but MT is ticked.
  10. Quote 2.1 The security of firearms, section 1 ammunition and shotguns within a dwelling can in most cases be achieved using a cabinet designed for this purpose. New cabinets should conform to the requirements of BS7558 (see Annex C for examples on points of construction). The cabinet should be fixed to the structure and located to frustrate attack or identification by persons visiting the premises I'm going to have to rely on 2.1, as the cabinet went up the loft on Saturday ! Since I'm north of Inverness we have cold in winter, slightly less cold in summer I will however look into limiting condensation, good point.
  11. I was told that cabinets in lofts/cellars are best as any intruder/potential gun thief probably wouldn't even look in the loft. I have the with the locking box at the top, the PCP is already inside. I have several years experience with a wide range of firearms.
  12. Have now had a chance to speak to the club secretary who told me to apply now, so I'm going to apply for both together.
  13. Thanks guys, just took them all out of the freezer to make a big curry. I was up at 4am again this morning but the weather has gone t**$ up here so it's FPS on the PC instead of rabbits this morning.
  14. Bagged three on Wednesday morning but was worried about the big ones kidneys, they were adhered to the abdominal cavity. Is he OK to eat, others have said it's just fat but is it ?
  15. OK, the form. When I was a teenager I was fined £40 after a fracas at a party. Can't remember the date or what the charge was so don't know what to write. Also the countersignatory, is a teacher OK ?
  16. OK, had a long chat with farmer today and we both agreed there was no problem with the shotgun, but nobody uses a rimfire on his land so it's not been checked for suitability. He himself was thinking about getting a rimfire but just went with the air rifle and shotgun ! So shotgun it is for now and I'll just wait until my six months are up at the club before deciding whether to go for the rimfire. If I win the lottery in the meantime, I will reconsider my options
  17. Thanks for the input. I texted the landowner today as I don't like bothering him with a call, he usually phones back but he hasn't this time. If i can't use the rimfire on his land but later find somewhere else, I suspect you have to have this verified and added to your form somehow ?
  18. Aye, good pic and there not too messy
  19. I've had several air pistols and rifles growing up and when I was grown up. Also been in the TA and really enjoyed the shooting. Got rid of the air rifles when the first born got to the ' what happens if I push this' stage. Ten years later and he's interested in guns, he has a few BB guns and this year we bought a PCP air rifle for pigeon and rabbit shooting. We also joined the local rifle club where we have been using the air rifle and the club .22 and shotgun. ( not always available ). I would now like to buy my own rimfire and possibly a shotgun. I have pretty much decided to get a gun cabinet up in the loft and I'm going to see the local landowner about using a shotgun and rimfire on his land, I already have permission for the air rifle. It's now just the sequence of events that's a wee bit confusing. I can only make it to the club every other weekend so haven't had a good sit down and chat but gather that I can apply for a FAC after 6 months. Q1 Can I only then use any rifle at the club ? Q2 Do I have to apply for a SGC separately ? Q3 Should I get permission from the landowner before doing anything.
  20. WARNING: Nooby type question coming... I had previously seen pictures of some pretty messy bunnies after being shot with a .17HMR. But these are obviously good enough to eat Where were they hit and was it messy on the other side ?
  21. Hi all, I'm here to ask lots of silly questions about rifles, shotguns and quarry. Anybody else in this neck of the woods ?
