  1. I shoot a mile and a half outside Callington in a village called Trevigro. Lots of crows about where I shoot but not tried finding anywhere else to have a go! Where exactly are you seeing them?
  2. Hi all, We've got a four and a half year old weimaraner who, when scrambling over some rocks at the beach has managed to tear the cruciate ligament on his back left leg. He's a family dog, but I take him out shooting and he's very active and is always charging about - he's a big boy too and weighs about 40-45kgs. Having spoken to the local vets, an operation to sort it will cost £2,000, and the results will degenerate in 2 years, perhaps needing another similar operation. After the operation, he won't be allowed out of the house for at least 6 weeks (we're told) and has to remain inactive to avoid damaging the ligament further, and in all likelihood he'll end up getting excited and inadvertently damaging it further regardless of how inactive we keep him. Some people have said to leave it for 6 months and see what happens (his leg has already lost of a lot of muscle by him favouring the other leg), others say operation, others say weigh up his quality of life after an operation and see if actually putting him down may be the kindest thing for all involved. Has anyone had a similar experience and can offer some advice? Thanks
  3. I'm near Callington so just down the road from you!
  4. Hi all, Over the bank holiday weekend I had a go at a 60 bird sporting and had a great time. I shot well and really enjoyed it. However,I dropped a lot of targets on the duck stand and couldn't get to grips with the springing teal. There were 3 pairs on report, first was a landing duck style target coming from above and behind and quickly dropping. I got the hang of this one and did ok. The next bird was a springing teal, the trap was about 12 yards out from the shooting cage and the targets were quickly rising and curling to the right slightly with the wind. How do you guys approach a target like this? What's a good way to hit these consistently? I tried shooting it up the backside and on the right hand edge to account for the curl, but no joy. I tried swinging ahead and still couldn't get the hang of it. I know it's hard to say what I was doing wrong without having seen me shoot but any ideas would be great! Cheers.
  5. Brilliant! Thanks everyone, thought it was as simple as that but just wanted to make sure.
  6. Hi all, If I were to go for a weekend away to a friends house on Friday, stay for the weekend and shoot clays on Sunday then return home, could I legally take my gun along despite there being no gun safe at the house in which I'm staying? Any help is much appreciated - must be a common issue with lots of people travelling for bought days of shooting!
  7. Ideal! Let me know when you get them in and we can take it from there, cheers.
  8. Looking for a cheap twenty bore starter gun around the £200/250 mark in Devon/Cornwall/Somerset. Any barrel types considered, anybody got anything please get in touch! Cheers.
  9. Anyone else catch this? From about 35 mins onwards, there's a good little section at a days driven shooting. One of the grad teachers connects with a pupil by taking him beating. Nice to see a bit of shooting on a BBC channel! http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03qvlkk/Tough_Young_Teachers_Episode_3/
  10. What does everyone like to read about in the shooting mags? What makes one better than another? Personally I like the pigeon shooting articles and generally things about DIY shoots and how they're getting on. What do you guys like best?? Cheers
  11. The success I've had has been with people known by my family/neighbours. Currently looking for more land for a bit of variety but have just moved house and finding it hard to find out who owns what land! How do you guys approach a farm where you don't know the farmers name??
  12. Hi all, I'm very keen to get involved in some beating this coming season. Not at all bothered about getting paid or anything like that, just want a good day out! I've never been beating before but have been rough shooting for years and just want to try something a bit different. I'm half an hours drive from Plymouth, in South East Cornwall (live near Callington, for those that know the area) and willing to drive up to about an hour. If anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated! Thanks, George
  13. Newnham Park shooting ground nr Plympton is good, but expensive. Otherwise try Lower Lake shooting ground in Cornwall, the owner Bill is a great guy and a good coach, he'll soon put you right
  14. Hi everyone A few months ago I set up a Clay Pigeon Shooting Society at university. Since I set it up late on last term (the start of summer) we only have a few members and need to get recruiting at this years societies fair in late September. However, we need something to make the Clay Shooting stand out a bit more from all the other societies... I was wondering if anyone in the Birmingham area would be kind enough to lend me a large camo net for just a day to put over our stand to make the society stand out a bit more from the others. Also if anyone has any used cartridges lying about that I could get hold of that would be brilliant - the idea is to have the Society's website and email address on stickers on the cartridges which would be a bit more interesting than handing out the usual leaflets! Thanks in advance for any and all replies!
  15. I've never been to Barby but have been to Wedgnock. I really enjoyed it, decent layout and really nice atmosphere. I first went there for a round of sporting at Christmas and have since set up a clay shooting society at uni and have decided to use Wedgnock as they have been really helpful and have given us good discounts!
  16. I've got a 2 year old Weimaraner and he's brilliant at retrieving a dummy to hand without any fuss. I introduced him to shot game (that I'd brought home) a while ago and he's fine at retrieving that to hand too. However, when I've taken him shooting and got him to retrieve freshly shot pigeons he always has a little chomp when he picks them up and then brings them back to me but is damaging the meat. I've since been throwing pigeons for him to fetch when out on walks which he retrieves without damaging - so it's just the freshly shot ones he bites! Anybody got any tips on how to stop him biting when he retrieves freshly shot birds? Cheers
  17. Where abouts in Cornwall was this? I'm near Callington and finally there's a few building up now! Two very good bags for the are there nice one
  18. Hi is the Air Arms still for sale?

  19. I'm after a second hand .177 PCP air rifle set up. Condition of woodwork etc isn't too important as long as all the necessary working parts are fine. Only after something to knock the rabbits over in Spring/Summer so can only spend up to £350-400 max. Not fussed about the brand of the air rifle, just after something that's accurate and will do the job! Cheers.
  20. nice work! where abouts in Cornwall are you. i live in the s. east near callington and the best ive ever had was a bag of around 30-40
  21. Thanks for all the help so far! At the uni of Birmingham, staying on the Vale. There's still no clay club here, was thinking of setting it up in fact! I have a bike..need to find a way of getting some shooting! It's been a bit of a contrast coming from rural Cornwall where shooting everyday wasn't a problem to Birmingham. I'll ask around and see if i can get a group together.
  22. Can anybody recommend any decent (and preferably cheap!) clay grounds near Birmingham/West Midlands? I'm at University so anywhere nearish a train station would be perfect! Thanks in advance for any suggestions
  23. Where abouts in Cornwall are you? I'm nr Callington and there are only a few, neveer really seen many around here though. Most i've shot decoying is about 30, and that was on an exceptional day, there don't seem to be the same numbers as there are elsewhere.
  24. I am wanting to post my pcp air rifle, is it legal to send it to a private address and not to a firearms dealer? Also would i have to empty the air reservoir? Thanks, George
