  1. i agree with all you say, and reading all the informative replies [which i thank you all for they have helped me a lot] i think i will try some heavier bullets they do seem to offer greater stopping power and more humane kills. the reason i tried the lighter ammo was the fact that they would seem to compensate for my poor judgement of distance at night being very fast and flat, as i say zero at 100yd and still the same aim point at 200yd.
  2. thanks for the info on other makes of ammunition, i don't suppose i will be a heavy user of 223 ammo and i haven't had the gun long, yes 3/4 of an inch at 100 yds is certainly good enough for me and i will be keeping all my empty cases. i have to say though i have been reading up and studying ballistics charts and i also read a reply on this site which said that hornaday 40gn v max zeroed in at 100yds will still be flat at 200yds. i tried it for myself and who ever wrote the reply was absolutely correct. can i ask mry716 if the cheaper stuff will do the same, if so i will be phoning around soon.
  3. its interesting to hear you say that you can achieve greater accuracy from hand loads, is it that you can put more precision in your detail, is it getting the powder quantity dead right or the whole process
  4. just been out and bought some hornaday ammo in 223 and paid just over a pound each bullet. it makes me wonder about reloading, never tried it before, so i ask, does it work out to be much more economical to reload ?.
  5. thanks oly, an interesting piece of reading
  6. ive just baught myself two new rifles, a CZ527 in 223 and a savage arms in 17hmr and i suppose i will put more shots through the 17hmr on average. so i am wondering how often i should clean the barrels out, is their a number of rounds i should fire before cleaning or do i clean after every new box of shells ?.
  7. its interesting you bring the question of twist rate into it, the gun i have ordered is a cz527 varmint laminate 223cal. i assumed it had a 1-9 twist but i have just read an article which tells me that it is 1-12.....or do they come in two different twist rates?...it all seems a bit confusing.... is there somebody out there who actually knows for sure.
  8. thanks for the replies, i think the 223cal seems to offer a wide choice of bullets. ive been reading lots of reviews on lots of calibres and for accuracy they all seem to place the hornaday on top so i think i will start with v-max 40 gn. i tried very hard to find hornaday ammo for my hornet but it seemed impossible in the cambs area which is probably why every gun shop in the area advised me to go for a 223.
  9. ive just traded in my old hornet for a new 223 cz527 varmint, now comes the question of bullets, do i go for a 40gn for accuracy and speed or a 50gn for stopping power ?.
  10. 25 years ago i baught a new lincoln no2 multi, heaven only knows how many shells its fired and quite a lot of them were winchester xx 52gm magnums, its been on foreshore and marsh, pigeon and game it still refuses to go wrong. cant remember how much i paid but worth every penny. the gun i had before it was a lamber but returned it after 3 weeks with a cracked stock....... last xmas i baught my daughter a lincoln premier 20 paid £595 again worth every penny.

    rangefinder

i think i,ll wait untill after christmas and see if i have any money left in the pot, if i have i may try a cheap one. but if i can change the topic just a bit, johngalway talked about buying his rangefinder from the u.s.a. ive often wondered about doing the same but i dont know what the price limit is before you have to pay any tax, ok you buy at a price and pay p@p but are there any other charges?.

most of the adds for rangefinders boast 1mtr accuracy would you say that was correct?
  13. hi i am thinking of trying a rangefinder i will be using a 223 for foxes and a 17hmr for rabbits, does anybody have any advice on using rangefinders. i see a lot advertised but do not know anybody who uses one.
