  1. Thankfully this does not involve me.

I was playing golf with a mate yesterday who is currently looking divorce in the face.

Him and the mrs have been stupid with their cash and have £24,000 of credit card debt.

Anyway the credit cards are ALL in his name. As far as he is concerned it is his debt and he will be left with it when they divorce. My understanding was it will be split between the two of them.

Anyone know the answer? Im sure his divorce lawyer will tell him for a few hundred quid mind!

  2. As you may have seen I started a thread a few days back about a troublesome dog I encounter when walking my dog.

To cut a long story short it is not true! I was doing some reading relating to work about dealing with conflict in a management situation and thought I would conduct a little experiment! I deliberately posted a controversial thread and sat back to see what would happen.

In my initial post I was careful not to use the word "shoot" for the very reasons people have sited, SGC in danger etc.

I am sorry if I wound people up. It did get a bit out of hand to be honest!!

Anyway it proved a couple of things I was reading about.

  3. fortune82 - I have sympathy with what you say, but the link to the newspaper article was just stupid.

I hear what you say about the damage that one particular Rottweiller did, but it wasn't the same dog. Damage can be done by dogs large and small. It added nothing to your cause.

    Point taken.

    :good:

  4. I can see your problem, but am unable to offer much help other than whats allready been said.

Those extending leads are bloody useless , especially on a big dog.

The real problem lies with the owner for not having socialised and trained the dog when young, i have allways owned large dogs... German shepards, rottweiler/shepard crosses and pure rottweiler... all have been socialised and trained and are no problem when out walking , but i'm allways aware of what they are capable of, so i tend to watch other dog walkers to see if they have a problem with there dogs which could cause trouble.

A strong, stout stick.... prefferably one with a heavy Ball end is all i can advise.

More a bad owner problem than breed of dog.

Don't get me wrong, I put the blame firmly at the owners door. Rightly or wrongly I would be less concerned if it was say a springer or lab snarling yet I know both could inflict serious injury. I have nothing against large breeds, my friend has an Alsation which is a cracking friendly dog which plays for hours with my Cocker.

  5. It is not irrelevant at all, it merely shows what one of these animals can do when uncontrolled. The dog I encounter regularly is acting in an uncontrolled manner.

If you took the time to read my first post you will see I have spoken to the owner about his dog but he seems unconcerned, hence my intial post. I regularly encounter this animal which is overpowering its owner and acting in an aggressive manner.

Fair enough people keep large and powerful dogs, the majority realise the potential dangers associated with these breeds and train / socialise their animals accordingly. This owner obviously has little control over his dog and has apparently not socialised it with other dogs or people. We have plenty of posts on here from Rotty owners saying they think this dog and owner is out of order.

What annoys me about this forum is the number of threads hi-jacked by know it alls.

I simply started by asking if there was anything that could be done to control a large dog IF it was to attack me or my dog.

We then get the usual **** from the "grow a set of balls" lot and the "its not aggressive just trying to get to know you" lot.

Thats not what I asked and to be honest I don't really care if people think I need to grow a set. At the end of the day I would not fancy a Rotty attack.

  6. I think the chance of the crown getting a conviction under the Dangerous Dogs Act on your evidence is unlikely. Unfortunately although the legislation states that your fear of a bite is enough the police/CPS may not want to go with it.

Also be careful regarding the carrying of a spray, if it's noxious to humans you may get done for possession of a offensive weapon.

    ATB

I am not going to carry a spray for exactly this reason. My Father works for the CPS, I am seeking his legal advice on the situation regarding the dog.

  7. I think you should get a life and grow some balls.

Have a chat to the owner, be a man.

Do you really think the police will be interested in a bloke walking his dog on a lead who has done nothing wrong.

He has not committed any offense and has not done anything to get a dog control order imposed on him.

If you do decide to carry a small sprayer with a noxious stuff in to spray in the dogs face then expect to get arrested and loose your ticket.

What an amazingly constructive comment! Well done, your wisdom astounds me. Perhaps I would talk to the owner were it not for 9 stone of muscle barking, growling and baring its teeth.

Why don't you give this lads father a call and impart some of your intellect on him. I'm sure he will be all ears.

  8. At last some sense! Thanks for all the good advice from everyone.

The routes I walk my dog along do vary from night to night however we usually bump into this dog at least twice a week wherever we go. As for changing time, I am constrained by work etc so have to walk him in the evening.

To be honest I do cack myself when I see the dog pulling a 6 foot bloke along the road! However I do not want to speed up incase this sparks the chase instinct. What also concerns me is the dog is on an extendable lead and is often 5 - 10 metres in front of the bloke on what looks like a very flimsy cord. Last night when we encountered the dog it was half way round a corner with the owner unable to see it properly.

Anyway first thing I am doing is contacting the police regarding this dog tomorrow.

    Thanks for the help.

  9. You need to read my initial response again, my advice was that of you planning to shoot a dog in the head. Had nothing to do with my affection for "killer dogs"

I think you need to lighten up a bit. Do you honestly think I am going to carry a shotgun with me when walking my dog and then shoot someone elses dog?

Have you heard of the phrase tounge in cheek?

  10. So anyone owning large breed of dogs are "cretins" Mate, you really have a chip on your shoulder!

"this dog is a danger and is uncontrolled as soon as it sees me" I'm no dog whisperer but my guess is this dog doesn't go to sleep at night thinking about finding you the next morning.

For your information I don't have any dog/s, but I have owned large dogs and did also come across narrow minded people like yourself.

Well well you clearly have something to prove. I simply started this thread asking if their was anything I could do to protect myself from a large and, I believe, aggressive dog should the worst happen.

All of a sudden you come along blabbing away the usual **** we hear when large breeds are involved. Low and behold you've owned large breeds in the past so obviously you give a completely unbiased appraisal of the situation. I often find people who have large breeds have a bit of a knee jerk tendancy as sson as anyone merely suggests a large dog might be aggressive or uncontrolled.

Next time I see the dog I think I will walk over to the growling frothing mess and calmly pat it on the head. If it decides to attack me I can live safe in the knowledge that "any dog can be dangerous".

As for the cretan comment, I am not tarring all large dog owners with the same brush but a lot of the people I see with these animals are exactly that, wanting the animal for nothing more than a status symbol which is exactly what has happened in this case.

  11. On a similar theme....my friend was letting a 3 bedroom flat out to a couple in Scotland. They split up and only the bloke was left in the flat. He then ****** off and sub let the flat to three scum bags. My mate popped round one day to check all was ok to be met by three strangers.

Over the course of the next few months they pretty much destroyed the flat, and had the gas and electricity cut off due to non payment.

Constant police involvement took over three months to shift the scum from the flat, by which time it needed over £4000 spending on it to rectify the damage.

As far as the law seems to be concerned there is no come back for the three who have caused all the damage!

  12. are you sure its aggresion dog to dog, not pure over exitement or even protecting the owner from your dog ( most likely if yours is off lead his is on). Don't judge a dog mearly by its breed, i have been bitten by three jack russels, one border collie and one boxer. though i apriciate what your saying big dogs like this do require special care on the part of the owner and too many idiots take pride in thier dogs being "hard and tough" but at the end of the day it just shows there owner to be an insecure wimp. Nothing can be done about a dog barking at yours or pulling on the leash, other than politely suggesting the owners seeks profesional help with his dogs issues - acting aggresively or angrily towards him might be a bad move under the circumstanes

I had considered that. I think it is real aggression as it is growling, barking and foaming! The worrying thing is the bloke has it on an extendable lead which looks prety flimsy to me. I am asking on here because I am actually concerned the lead will break one of these days then the dog has a free run at us!

  13. Sounds to me like little man syndrome!

Coming on a public forum and talking about putting 42g of BB into a dogs head is not the wisest thing to do.

The fact is the dog hasn't attacked you or your dog, yet you're planning on what to do "just in case" and even seeking advice. The dog is being walked on a lead, if you see it cross the road!!!

I'm guessing the gun you plan to use in the event of an attack is licensed and you are in fact a certificate owner, my advise would be to act like a responsible person as was presumed when you were granted your SGC.

How upstanding of you. When a dog which probably weighs 9 stone drags a fuly grown man across the road towards you whilst growling, barking and foaming at the mouth I believe it is a good idea to seek advice on the situation should anything arise in the future.

Let me guess...you have four Rottweillers and would trust them with a new born baby an day?

As far as I'm concerned this dog is a danger and is uncontrolled as soon as it sees me. If such a dog was to set about me or my dog I would not care if what I did was illegal to be honest.

As for small man syndrome, the only people displaying that are the cretans who feel the need to own dogs bred for fighting or defence, time bombs waiting to kill.

  14. Hi if the dog only attacked your dog its adog on dog attack nothing can be done silly law in my opinion however if the dog attacked you that is assault by animal then you can get a charge against the owner and dog like can't leave the house without a mussel etc.

Hope this helps hope you and dog are ok

What a stupid law. If my dog was attacked by this animal its days will be numbered one way or another.

  15. On my usual dog walking route I often come across a bloke walking a Rottweiler. The dog often growls and barks when we pass and literally pull the bloke along the road.

I have said to the bloke he needs to get the dog under control as he clearly has little over it. He doesnt seem overly bothered however.

If the worst did come to the worst and the dog attacked either my dog or myself is there anything I could do to fend off the attack or are these animals so powerful resistance is futile?

Could I report the bloke at present for not being in control of what is potentially a deadly animal? I can do without the usual "any dog can be dangerous ****". I would rather take my chances with a Cocker, Springer, Lab etc than a Rotty, Akita, Pit Bull etc etc.

  16. Well since you ask. An short day for me is 12 hours. 14 hours isn't unusual. I am on my blackberry or laptop for another 2-4 hours/day. I am usually in the office for a few hours on Saturday. Sunday I limit myself to a couple of hours. So in all a very realistic 80+ hours/week. Let's knock off a few hours for being on PW and call it 78+. And oh for the luxury of not having to work during my 5 weeks holiday. I dream of that. I take my holidays to fit around the children's school holidays. As you do!

80 + hours a week? That will kill you. You are either making a lot of money or are doing something which isnt making enough money hence the long hours.

  17. Nope I don't get it. You get a salary and you get three months off during the year. Most people get a salary and get one to one and a half months off. Can you explain why you feel that you are not better of than somebody who gets less holiday?

And that's the short straw with pensions. Sometimes you don't get to collect it. Do more teachers die young than other professions? Is that what you are insinuating? I don't know just asking.

We may well get 3 months holiday a year which is a lot more than many other jobs. However as a teacher I work around 60 hours a week as do most of my collegues. When you divide this out over the course of a year taking into account a "normal" 5 weeks off it works out at around 48 hours a week.

How many hours a week do you work?

You also probably have the added benefit of being able to decide WHEN you take your holidays therefore avoiding paying peak prices all the time.

You probably do not have to work at home during your holidays which I can assure you many teacher do. I will have spent three days of my easter break working this time round.

  18. I picked up a couple of PDP wads which landed next me on a pheasant shoot in November from some Hull High Pheasant I was using. I have put them on my lawn to see how long they take to break down. They still look like plastic wads to me five months later!!!

  19. As a teacher who has worked in a large secondary school for 6 years I can see both sides of the argument.

As teachers I believe we are well paid, have good conditions, job security and a solid pension. The majority of the "old" teachers I work with believe we are underpaid and over worked. Where else could they earn £35,000+ unpromoted and have 13 weeks holiday a year?

It is inevitable in the current climate that we will have cuts imposed on our pensions. As an example a collegue retired last year, she had worked for 27 years as a result of a having 3 kids. She retired at 60 and could reasonably be expected to live, and draw her pension, for more than 27 years. There is the problem.

The flip side of this is that I work from 8 am in the morning until 8:30 - 9 every night with a couple of hours break for travel, food dog etc, Monday to Thursday, I have Friday night off. I work every Sunday for 2 or 3 hours and usually a couple of days every holiday. I am also expected to do Saturday morning revision sessions from mid April until June.

I have seen a third of the teachers I began my career with leave the profession. As a staff in my school we work constantly to improve the exam results of our pupils yet every year when we return in September we are told by The Head and the Local Authority that it is not good enough. Results must improve etc etc.

As a result the majority of staff in my school, and in the profession as a whole are of the attitude of "what is the point in working so hard when we recieve very little in the way of job satisfaction?"

If the NUT really want to cause the government problems they should forget strike action. Every member of teaching staff should be instructed to work lets say 40 hours a week. That would bring the education system to its knees in a matter of weeks. Personally that would mean no marking at all and several lessons a week unplanned.

I know for a fact that I would be physically unable to teach a class and do all the related work when in my sixties.
