How much lead you got to melt

    About 50kg

Pure antimony wont just mix in if you add it to lead, it will just float on the top. You need type alloy

Will it not if used with tin and a bit of flux. This video looks very good and full of information to me? But obviously I could be wrong.

Also be extremely cautious with lead pipe! Split it if you use it as it can trap condensation which then causes a steam explosion especially if brought in from outside in Winter to a warm casting shed.

I read that somewhere else thank you. Just tring to source all the equipment now! Trying to find a cast pot isn't as easy as I thought

Happy to help. For certain if you go the wheelweight route you must never get any of the new type in your pot as they contain, I think, zinc and other metals that give off nasty to your health fumes.

Thats what i thought and won't be going that route. I was originally going to look at the straight lead, tin and antimomy route as it looks the best quality and value, but will certainly look at linotype as well.

    Thanks again

Linotype contains antimony. About 13% I think. Use Lyman's "pig pen" alloy calculator (as it looks like a cattlemarket pig pen apparently) to work out how much lead you'll need to mix it with. Also old style wheelweights do too. But they are a PITA as you have to melt it to get the clips out and all the muck they've accumulated.

Thats brilliant thanks. I've heard of the old wheel weights but obviously harder to get now as they don't use lead anymore

I think this is used in the water industry. Might be worth popping on your complete face mask - to comply with government regulations and go look at your local water treatment works 🔫😁

    Just looked on theBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1kg-High-Purity-99-9-Antimony-Sb-Metal-Block-Ingot-UK-/233418007055.

I don't use it so can't really help.

    Thats brilliant thanks 😊

hello, do you mix that with lead?  making shot ?

hello and yes. Going to try a 3% ally with a touch of tin as well. Just going to play with the hardness as obviously raw lead is too soft.

Just chuck in a sugar puff or weeto to make up minor stack heights for now. Rose Gold cartridges suggest Kibworth. Ard you anywhere near Kettering?

Thats exactly where the rose golds came from 👍 assume that's one of their own brands?

I'm leicester side of kibworth unfortunately but Kettering isn't far. Whys that?

You wont find the loads because its american. Why would american company waste time and resources on Europe data? Ill have a look. Its 12gauge you want right?

Id load up 1,1/4 oz loads. Check the fiocchi hull data for 1,1/4 oz. That powder is expected to work well at that loading

Thats great thanks. I'll go with the fiocchi hull data.

Thanks for all your help 👍

hello, theres a good video by TATV on different wad materials, with a home made cutter, very neat

I've literally just watched that before you replied. Very good. Never dreamed of using standard corrugated cardboard! Now wheres all those Amazon boxes....

    Thanks

  10. good morning all, hope everybody is safe and well.

I've posted another thread on here regarding overpower cards, but thats run off in a tangent (mainly because of my stupid questions) so thought I'd start a new one as I'm in desperate need of assistance.

The current set up I have got are as follows:-

Various 70mm eley, rose gold and RC HPF3 hulls.

    Lee Load All 2

    Alliant Herco powder

    CCI 209 primers

    18mm fibre wads

    No 7 shot

The main issues I'm finding is that I didn't realise the Load All wasn't designed for fibre wads, but various members have told me they have loaded them fine, and I would like to continue this from an environmental point.

I'm also aware I need overpowder cards or wads so I'll be getting those.

My thought train so far is that I've used the data from the Alliant manual for 2 3/4 inch Fiocchi hulls, and the grain range dependant on wad (as fibre isn't listed) is between 25.5 and 26.

I've test loaded (with used primer) an Ely Hull, loaded the powder, inserted the wad, loaded the 32g of no7 shot and have a gap of 9.6mm between the top of the shot and the crease line in the cartridge, or 18.2mm total distance between the top of the shot and the opening edge of the cartridge.

My questions are, are the grain assumptions ok as ive gone with the .180 insert in the Load All which should give a projected 26.3 grain, but after several weighing checks is coming out at 24.7 grains. And do I have to make the 9.6mm gap up with overpowder cards/wads as this seems a large gap to me?

Apologies in advance for all the questions but I'm a total newbie at reloading and have scoured the net and manuals etc, but just feel a bit more confident with your expert assistance

    Many thanks!

    Dan

Thats great cookoff, thanks again. I'll use the data for the cheddites. All of the empties I have a relatively new.

Maybe not. The alliant website doesn't give me the option of the cci 209 primer with the cheddites. Starting to wish I hadn't gotten into this now 😭

I'm really struggling to find the grain load for the eley hulls with cci 209 primers and 19mm fibre wads...

perfect thank you. Anybody know about the powder grain with a fibre as I'm using the 10% more than plastic as a guide?

    Thanks

When I was corresponding with Homeloader David Garrard.I wanted to load compression cases with felt wads..David said yes you can But it’s best to put Thin paper wad in first to stop grease e c t that might contaminated the powder.I have actually loaded strait cases without a over powder wad..They shot fine.

    thanks for that. Very helpful.
