  1. News reports today claim that the overwhelming majority of black and latino voters voted for Obama. This attracted no adverse comment other than suggestions that Obama had mobilsed the ethnic vote. I wonder what commentators would have made of it if Romney had mobilised the white vote...

The Republican Party has a serious demographic problem.

It's known as the party of old, white men, and has largely appealed to rural, protestant voters. The only problem is the country's becoming increasingly non-white and secular. Whites only make up 63% of the U.S population now, down from almost 90% in 1950. Also Protestants now make up less than 50% of the country. Yet the Republican Party is over 90% white.

Unless they start reaching out to minorities very soon, it's going to be dead as a national party.

  2. That's a handsome beast.

What sort of distance did you or can you take a dear at with a bow?

    Depends.

I wouldn't attempt a shot past 25 or at the most 30 yards with my bow. But some of the really nice (and pricey) bows they're making now can take deer out to 50+ yards. The average shot here in Virginia is 18 yards I think. I took this one at 12 yards.

  3. This is a big favourite in my household but some of you more experienced guys (and gals) might help me with something my son's repeatedly asked: why do they use pump action shotguns as opposed to semi-autos (or even fully autos)?

    Good question.

The characters on the show have made some pretty stupid choices when it comes to weapon selection. During season 1, when they made it to the CDC, there were literally piles of M4 carbines and other heavier machine guns lying around (the doctor inside even brought it up at one point), yet they didn't take any. You would think in that kind of situation, they would want as much firepower as humanly possible, but I guess not. Remember, zombies wouldn't be your only problem, but other survivors as well. They probably would've done better at the farm when the walkers overran it last season if they had had some of those weapons from the CDC.

Oh well, I guess rate of fire and magazine capacity are overrated when you're fighting mobs of undead people trying to eat you...

  4. Chill out for a bit and see what happens. I didn't speak to my old fella for 6 years over something daft. It wasn't daft at the time but in hindsight it normally always is. I'll always regret the years I missed with him when he's gone but the flip side is that perhaps we wouldn't get on so well now if it wasn't for the great leveller.

At the end of the day he's your dad and you only get one in life. Be like fonzy.

Has anyone ever told you that you're a misunderstood genius? :good:

  5. Me and the Old **** have never been much mates to be honest. But the older I get the clearer things become.

I dont think he hates me, nor do I hate him, I just think it one of those really old fasioned monsyllabic ofather son relationships and I can live with that.

But likewise he still drops the od sly comment every now and again, usually round the dinner table or Christmas and I always react, and that I think is the problem.

    We're both too similar.

You should be fine though mate, blood is thicker than water.

Sounds like your dad has a few things in common with mine.

I guess our age difference might have something to do with it (he was pushing 40 when I came along). But the older he's gotten, he's just become more and more bitter and unpleasant to be around.

  6. After a rocky year or so, it appears I've had a permanent falling out with my dad.

Long story short, words were exchanged, things were said that probably shouldn't have been said, and we haven't spoken in several weeks. I visited my parents and sister on Sunday, and came close to going off on him again when he made some smart comment while I was talking to my brother-in-law. We've had our spats before, but this time it feels different. With what was said and all, I just don't see us reconciling any time soon. Thing is i'm not that uspset about it, indifferent even. Our relationship has been deteriorating for a while now so maybe it's for the best.

Sorry, I just felt like venting.
