  1. Do not worry about 21 grams not being up to the job, my Grandson is killing 30 yards+ clays with 18 gram 7's in his 28 bore and I have killed a lot of pigeon and game with 24 gram 6's in my 20 bore. Try giving Dave Izzard a phone call, his products for recoil reduction are superb. His company is Recoil Solutions and his products were developed by him to ease his neck and shoulder problems, he is a great guy for advice and you will not be given the 'hard sell'.

JDog, Not sure why you require a lighter cartridge but if it is to abate the effects of recoil on your body I thoroughly endorse Westley's comments regarding Dave Izzard's kit. I have the full Isis system on a pair of side by sides and they are miracle bits of kit. If you want some first hand user experience pm me or give me a call. Will pm you my number.

    Best wishes,

    Milo.

  2. Slimy sod.

He thought that he could bully the Committee as he has his staff but he was put firmly in his place. I cringed at times.

He's a horrible toad and not at all sophisticated. A decent committee would have made made mincemeat of him but that wasn't the object of the exercise. The idea is to put just enough pressure on him so that the pension fund is sorted out. Hence the threat to call his wife to face the committee. I can assure you he won't like that.

  3. Unfortunately, where myth busters got it slightly wrong is by not totally understanding Newton’s laws of motion and relying on a school boys version in the monologue. They do apply but as I alluded to in my earlier post trying to decelerate so quickly by hitting a stationary object alters the equations for Newton’s laws (impulse momentum theorem). So saying for the body to travel 10ft the shooter must also travel 10 ft is not accurate.

It’s Momentum transfer that knocks something down and this is different when shooting the slug than when being hit by it.

This change in momentum is a force which is imparted into the body it hits. So, we need to take the time part of Newton's 3rd law then F=mA, Impulse=delta P, (the impulse-momentum theorem). The Impulse is the integral of the force over time, Force=-delta T. Meaning, Impulse = Change in Momentum

It’s quite easy to work out and prove how much this collision imparts by using the formulas from the impulse-momentum theorem.

The time taken is the important bit, if you catch an egg by holding your hand out stationary it smashes as the egg tries to change momentum instantaneously. Catch it whilst moving your hand backwards it takes longer for the change in moment it doesn’t smash.

Is it enough to move a body backwards? This is a whole other subject depending on all sorts of factors. If the slug hits something that has some elastic give such as flesh or Kevlar over flesh the time taken to change momentum will be gradual. With this gradual change the impulse will be low and doubtful if it would move anything backwards. If it hits dense or thick bone such as a skull, then this has less give so the time to change momentum will be a lot shorter hence the impulse will be greater and this might have the possibility to move the animal back.

So a large slug hitting solid bone with little flesh cover will give different results than hitting flesh or Kevlar over flesh. This is easily backed up and proved with the formulas.

Before anyone jumps down my throat about myth busters take time to read and actually understand impulse-momentum theorem. It’s all there for you to read on the net and it explains how it integrates with Newton’s laws of motion. If this wasn’t the case a hammer just wouldn’t work and be of no mechanical advantage at all.

Yes it’s a quiet day and I was bored.

    And now so are we.

That's a very cheap joke; sorry. Great to learn the true cause behind an effect. Thanks.

  4. The movement of the buffalo had more to do with its muscle reaction to being shot than the physical force of the slug moving it.

This is the answer. I have seen it with cape buffalo and even mature bull elephants weighing more than 10,000lbs. When brain shot the back legs sometimes collapse in such a way as for the entire animal to appear pushed backwards. The proof of the issue is that you never see the same effect when shot broad side to the extent that I have seen cape buffalo show very little reaction to the shot when hit in the heart/lung area with .458 Lott expanding ammunition generating about 5,000 ft lbs.

  5. The Establishment, represented in this case by Carney, favours the status quo.

Just because the majority votes for a Brexit doesn't mean it will happen and even if it does it will not be immediate or even close.

Brexit would have FAR more dire consequences for Continental members than for us; hence Obama's lame cameo.

The Remain camp are campaigning on the negatives of leaving, not the positives of staying; because there aren't many.

Time to press the reset button on our membership so that we can roll back some of the EU madness and have an arrangement that works for us.

I agree Cosd did make a meal of his point but how would you know that hardly happened at all ? It is absolutely inconceivable that plenty of wounding does not take place on such hunts where after a while when quotas are easily reached on close birds people inevitably start to ;) pick their shots.

Not criticising these shoots as I'd love to try it once myself but to pretend wounding is not a real problem with the vast numbers of shooters of varying abilities is naive.

    And there are no "quotas".

How do I know? Because, as stated in post #21, I have done it at the most famous and prolific estate in Argentina. Note, I said "happened" not happens.

As with many things, the reality is somewhat different from how people imagine it to be.

  8. Imagine how many birds are pricked with every shell fired, then times that by a couple of thousand per gun!!

    That hardly happened at all.

Why make a dramatic statement, with two exclamation marks for emphasis, when it is just your imagination rather than your experience? Not helpful to the original poster or other members reading this post who might consider going.
