  1. I mentioned the other evening that i had seen the start of vining on a pea field which had only had the headlands vined. The said field had pigeons building on it over the weekend and after i mentioned it to shooting buddy tan, it turned out he knew who's field it was, so of course he gained permission and invited me along. He had intel that the viners had stopped due to causing too much mud on the road and they would continue monday morning. The field has a multitude of 'buterfly' shooters at this time of year so we had move quickly and we headed for the field 1 hour after the viners had finished. The pigeons were not here in the big numbers today, but there was still a good few about. The edge of the field we needed to shoot from {because of wind and available cover} had a strip of peas left as it was full of charlock and various other weeds, the decoys had to be at least 15 yds from the hide. In the rush to get to the field tan left his bag at home containing his rotary and flapper! I had my rotary but my makeshift repair to storm damage had failed so we had no magnets or flappers Because of this we chose to shoot from two hides over one decoy pattern so that we could use a fairly big pattern of dead birds on sticks, floaters and canes. The pigeons didn't really play ball like we had hoped. Some decoyed well but most drifted on past high up showing little interest in the decoy pattern. We both shot well and tan managed a good few doulbes over the decoys and i managed a few lovely high birds that even JDog would have been impressed with. As the decoy pattern grew the birds commited a little better but at 6pm it was all over. We had a good pick up and picked 86 pigeons and 9 mixed corvids. It would have been nice to let the birds build on the field but as said earlier other shooters will be there tommorow no doubt. This pea field has had no real pigeon interest since it was drilled despite other fields nearby getting plenty of atttention. As soon as the crop is off the pigeons turned up Thanks for reading. .
  2. The peas have not produced a single bird for me this season and three days ago they were vined . I went to have a look at the stubbles yesterday afternoon and was surprised to see good numbers on two different fields , one having around 400 pigeon and just as many crows on and the second had around 300 pigeon. The only problem was after watching each field for around 20 mins or so nothing else was coming to join them so it seemed they had been there a while before I arrived, I was unsure if such a situation would be worth a go but decide to go much earlier than I usually do this time of year so that I would hopefully get a trickle of birds as they came to the field . I got to the field around 8.30 and there were a few crows present , I set up for both pigeons and crows , something I hardly ever do , I had 15 pigeon decoys out front with a magnet and 6 crow decoys tucked into a corner . Things got of to a very slow start and I managed just 4 crows and four pigeons in the first hour or so . It started to get a little better as the day went on still slow but enough to keep me interested mostly pigeons with the odd corvid here and there. Unfortunately I shot like a muppet for the second time in a week , god knows why but I did . I ended up with 56 pigeon 11 crows and three jackdaws ( some of the crows were dropped in standing wheat so not in pic ).
