Moderator altering POI?

OK guys, I'm still relatively new to FAC Rifle Shooting as still on a learning curve so I am after some helpful advice here!

I use a Winchester 290 Semin Autimatic .22LR for my bunny bashing (Mainly on the lamp) which is fitted with a SAK moderator and a set of Tasco 3-9 X 50 IR scopes. The problem that I am finding is that the gun seems to go off zero occasionally (Only minimally, but out of zero all the same), more so when I have used a full magazine (15 rounds) and have had to reload it. To reload the magazine I have to remove the moderator as the rifle has a tubular magazine under the barrel and the SAK moderator stops the magazine spring rod being extracted, when the magazine has been reloaded the moderator has to be refitted.

Is it possible that the removing and refitting of the SAK moderator is effecting the POI of the rifle or is it more likely that it is a simple case of the scopes are not holding their zero?

If it is more likely that the problem is being caused by the removing and refitting of the SAK moderator can anyone recommend a "slimmer bodied" moderator that will allow reloading without it having to be removed, or if it is the scopes not holding their zero can anyone recommend a reasonably priced budget set of scopes to replace the ones I have.

Please note that I have used the words "reasonablly priced budget scopes", I can not afford a set of S&B's or anything like that (As much as I would like to)

Your thoughts would be appreciated guys!

Thanks!

Knowing tubular-magazine rimfires like I do, I would say that it's the moderator that's to blame (the scope should hold its zero perfectly well). The slimmest mod on the market is the Parker Hale, and that still fouled the removal of the mag tube on my old Remington Speedmaster. I did experience some POI shift when I used the mod.

My local RFD has a mint second-hand CZ 452 American .22LR (16" barrel) for £195. You can get them for cheaper still if you shop around. If I was you I would free myself up altogether from the hassle of American rifles that don't readily accept moderators.

What ammunition are you using though? I get the most consistent results with Eley, RWS and Lapua, and the worst results with Winchester.

Thanks for that Baldrick! I always use Remington Subsonic ammo now which I find is fairly accurate and consistent for what I want!

The only problem I have with changing the rifle is the wife! If I go out and start spending more money on another gun I am likely to be put on "rations" for quite a long time. (Thinking about it that might not be such a bad thing as I might get some extra beauty sleep, heaven knows I need it) :)

As painful a prospect as it may seem, I anticipate that in the long-run, frustration will force you to ditch the Winchester in favour of a bolt-action or semi-auto fed via a box mag. I went out rabbiting last night and shot nearly 200 rounds. Having to remove the mod every 15 rounds and hope that there wasn't a pronunced POI shift, would have probably ruined the evening.

I am beginning to think that you are quite right there Baldrick! Unfortunately it is something that I will have to put on the back burner till something comes up but I have to admit that there are a few magazine fed semi auto .22's on Guntrader that I could possibly afford if I could get a part exchange!

Have to see what the wife thinks after I treat her to a little something!

Well, I am thankful for the advice and I have got hold of a Parker Hale Moderator which, when fitted "just" allows the magazine sprong rod to be removed and replaced for reloading without the need to remove and refit the moderator. I have yet to try the set up due to the weather up our way (It's been rain and drizzle all day long". As soon as I do get the chance I will let you know what the results are (Both noise and accuracy comparrisons). Hopefully it might save me from the extra expence of having to change rifles as I quite like my little Winchester. As soon as I get the time to try it I will put the results up on this thread, if there are anymore problems they can only be down to the gun or the scopes slipping out of zero!

I should add that I always use the same ammo!

Once again Thanks, especially to you Baldrick! ??????
