Tobyb525
I think thats just because its bare but I could be wrong. I used walnut on a knife and it was grey until varnished
Snap Cap
Was it a solvent or water based stripper? It shouldn't go grey really. Grey wood is a sign of weathering but that takes quite a while. Edited October 4, 2009 by Snap Cap

DaveB916
Give it a wipe over with white spirits on a rag it will give you an idea of the finish. Dave B
2-dead-in-the-air
I wiped it over with white spirits. and the grey comes out quite dark. The brown comes out a nice walnut colour. I think i will need to sand off the grey down to the brown. Would you recomend this ?
DaveB916
In my experience if it looks good when 'wet' with white spirit then as long as it is nice and smooth i.e. 1200 grit or 000 wire wool smooth it will finish nicely when oiled. Marcus
Walnut shouldn't look grey in its raw state. Did you wash down the stock once you have finished the stripping? It may be a mixture of the old varnish residue and dust from any sanding you may have done etc clouding the wood. You could try and use the stripper again, and before it dries wash the stock down with a clean damp cloth to remove all debris. I would let it dry then for a while. Then lightly sand to a finish you are happy with. Once that has been done wipe it over with a cloth and some spirits and see what it looks like then.
