njc110381
Well good old me strikes again. I get the idea in my head that I want a .300 and get it all passed with the firearms dept before even shooting one. I was at the range yesterday and a chap mentioned he had one with him. We got chatting about it and he offered me a couple of shots. Great, I thought. I'll get to see how these things perform. It was a light weight sporter. Not sure what make, but around the 5 1/2 to 6lb mark and with a hard plastic butt pad. "Standing or prone" I asked? "Depends if you want to get shoved or hurt" was the reply! So that was that, prone it is then. May as well get a feel for the worst it can hand out now I've got the chance. I fired two shots and my shoulder still knows it today. After 20 odd rounds from my 6.5x55 and a mates new .308 I was beginning to know I'd fired the guns but nothing to grumble about. That's just what you get from firing light weight rifles at the range (at least I find I know I've done it?). This thing nearly did me in for the day. What a gun, I can't wait to get one now. Maybe not a lightweight one though!
bignoel
i now shoot a lightweight 308 and love it but it was unmodified and was thinking of getting rid only because of noise level but decided to get it moderated as it shoots very good and fits well no shoulder prob's . cracking gun
njc110381
I think pretty much any centrefire is loud! A mod really does help, both with noise and recoil The .308 is a nice all round stalking calibre, there are lots of posh/unusual calibres around but the .308 is as good as any. You'll never struggle to find ammo for it and the range of bullet weights is vast. With an average load it's heavy enough to kill the biggest of Reds cleanly yet slow enough not to make a mess on the smaller Deer.
