steel shot

Used Gamebore 24 gram supersteels on Sunday for the first time at Catton hall, just wondering will steel shot do any harm to the barrels !

i have always used lead shot before and to be honest didnt notice any difference,

It won't do any harm because the shot is completely enclosed in a plastic wad cup and does not come into contact with the barrel.

Depends on the gun, should make sure it is proofed for steel shot, and in older guns not use too tight a choke, which shouldn't be a problem on clays anyway.

I thought that guns only had to be steel proofed if you're using shot size 3 or larger?

Possibly, but i was lead to believe in order to fire steel shot, the barrels and more importantly the choke tubes need to be proofed to fire it.

 

Makes sense that this is more important for bigger shot though.

Steel shot will not compress in the barrel like lead shot will . The biggest danger from using steel shot in to tight a choke proofed or not is that you could burst the barrel or at least bulge it .
