toka_shigazu
Hi, I am posting this after a conversation with an Amy Campbell of the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. I was recently approached by this group asking if I would help with their squirrel census. They are interested in North Merseyside and West Lancashire, red and grey squirrel populations. [i am sure they will be doing similar in other areas if you are outside this] They are after finding out about any red squirrel locations/sightings and also about any grey squirrels that you catch/shoot in that area. They have asked me if I would bag any bodies immediately after shooting in zipper type bags, as they test the fleas on the bodies as well as the bodies themselves for the squirrel pox. If they are then contacted they will send someone to collect the body from you. If sending bodies isnt practical then they are after knowing sex and location of any shot greys. Anyone interested in helping, if they can get in touch with Amy on acampbell@lancswt.org.uk and she will explain. I will post this on other such sites, as I can see this as a positive step with regards to the fieldsports community working with other agencies, in a time when any support is appreciated. I am sure there will be those who dissagree, if so do not get involved. I explained that most forums have squirrel census keeping a running total of kills but I think they want a bit more info and location details, although they were interested in this although it seemed an area they had never thought of to look for help. If anyone is interested and contacts Amy she will pass on contact numbers and futher details, or answer any questions. ATB Ewan
