Topgunners
I ventured out this morning with the threat of rain and sunshine forecast and after visiting a few of my farms; I could not find any birds on the floor or in the sky. I then was off further afield to check on some rape fields and as I passed a couple of maize fields that were combined last week, I spotted a few birds flying across the road and dropping down over the hedgerow. I drove along a bit further and pulled in to the end of the field to have a closer look. There were about 400-500 pigeons flitting all over the field and loads of cobs laying on the floor. I sat watching them for over half an hour and they were hopping from one field to another stubble field 2 fields along. I pulled out of the first field and drove into the 2nd one and sat watching this field for a good 20 mins before deciding to set up back in the first field slightly to the side of a big oak tree. There was a strip of tall un-cut maize about 6ft deep by 15yards long. As I was walking to set up the hide I only spooked out a fox and a Muntjac from the hedgerow. I set up my hide in amongst the tall maize and as I was putting out my deeks the skies opened and it started to hiss down. I ran back and put up my 50" brolly and sat there for half an hour waiting for it to ease off. Finally I managed to get out and set up my pattern, magnet and floaters in the drizzle. The pigeons had not returned for a while but the odd crow was having a look at my decoys and I managed to drop 4 before the 1st pigeon swung in. Then I had some steady sport for an hour and half, until the sun popped his head out and the wind dropped. The pigeons just would not commit to the pattern at all; and the rest of the birds I had were mainly high-flyers or whizz pasts. Dez arrived mid-day and went and set up in the field of stubble further along the road. I could hear the odd shot or two and then saw a mega-high pigeon drop out of the sky and crash into a tree on the way down. Seems like he is getting used to his X3 a bit more now. We shot till about 3.00pm as the birds (of any type) had stopped flighting completely. I had shot 37 pigeons and 6 rooks and crows and Dez had managed 7. A bit of a struggle and some very testing shots in some autumnal weather. I then decided to go put some pigeons out for a "basil" on another farm. I was set up underneath a trailer with my NV monocular scanning the field when I near on jumped out of my skin. Somebody screamed out my name and I looked around only to see the Farmer, his wife and their sons walking towards me. They were only coming out to set light to the bonfire and let off their fireworks. RIGHT BEHIND ME. AAAAAAAAAGH!!!!!!!! That put paid to my fox shooting; good and proper. The farmer apologised but invited me into the barn for some sausage and burger batches WITH ONIONS. MMMMMMMMMM. "O.K" I replied and as he lit the bonfire I went back out into the field and retrieved all my dead pigeons. Old Bazza weren't gonna get a freebie dinner on me tonight. I bagged them for a night out this week. I had my grub, watched the fireworks and then thanked them and left. Dave K
