air gunner
hi i have a nikko stirling 3-9x40 AO scope i normally leave the zoom setting on 9 this is fine for me. however if i change the zoom to a different number will it change my point of impact? if so would this be a good way of shooting at different distances without holdover? Beardo
most likely with a nikko - even my Swaro changes ever so slightly (.223 at 100 yards, zero'd on 16x, shoots 1/2" high on 24x, 1/4" low on 8x) - best to have a test shoot with different setting and get to know what's what on paper first (or just set it and leave it!) air gunner
yea i just set it and leave it normally i may experiment though as it could be useful for known ranges however i am getting the hang of holdover now and mill dots make the thing soo much easier! peek-at
You are much better off leaving it at 9 if thats the setting you like and judging your distance/holdeover based on that. If you keep chopping & changing around it wil be harder for you to learn how your gun shoots at a given distance and also your POI may move around when you change zoom setting. Stay put mate. cheers
air gunner
Cheers for the advice mate I'm going to leave it as it is as I have no need to change it and also as you say it will confuse my holdover which I have just got the hang of. However the changing poi may make holdover irrelevent for example if I used zoom 5 for 15 yards because the poi for 5 compared to 9 could be 2" lower. Probably won't make sence and it's not worth putting into practice but a thought.
jackinbox99
Only thing i would mention is low light.... if its getting dark, a much lower zoom helps greatly, so try a lower zoom out for a few shots just to get used to where you need to aim. I got a higher zoom lense and id spot the rabbit by eye, then by the time id actually managed to see him through the scope he`d legged it. I soon realised backing off the zoom to the minimum worked! Happy hunting!
