deeksofdoom
Last night myself and my shooting buddy went out for our first night of the year on the foxes. He was using his own rifle which was a .22 hornet and I was on the lamp and callers. The first place we call to was just off the main road called there for about 20 minutes until finally a pair of red eyes appeared out of the bog, the wind was wrong and the fox wasn't coming into us, we had a couple of chances of a shot but for the first one the backstop wasn't right and the bullet would have gone back into town and the second one I thought he was a bit too far out. we left that place to try another spot on the other side of the main road. The next place was right accross the road from a friend of ours who is a great shooting man, but has one failing he doesn't like lamping foxes. the reason being he's big in to the hounds, and believes you shouldn't spoil another mans sport........ but what he wouldn't know won't hurt him. He went into the first fields and began calling with a widgeon whistle, I lamped around the field a couple of times and nothing, about quarter of an hour into it I had switched to the wam and sure enough a pair of red eyes appeared. The wind was right the fox went down to our right trying to figure out what we were, at one point I thought I'ld lost him as he went pack out onto the road, but he appeared again and went back out to our left and was in the middle of the field looking at us. My buddy was down lying on the cold frost ground lining him up I could see him with the red filter on the lamp but he could see nothing through the scope, I switched to white light and he could see the fox sitting in the field. next thing bang and the lights went out, I kept the lamp on the spot he was last seen and sure enough the little hornet round had hit him or should I say her slap bang between the eyes death was instantaneous a good kill, and nice little vixen. Range when we paced it out was 89 metres. Thinking about it afterwards we could have taken the first fox easily as because he was at about the same distance, its hard to work out range at night time. Sorry about the pic its ****. Next spot we tried was about 2 miles away up on the hills over the main road, the night was still and frosty, there was no breeze, we parked up at a gate and I climbed up to the top of the gate post and scanned the fields with the red filter on, but could see nothing. Called for a bit on the wam still nothing, went on down the field with called again and still nothing. I switched calls to the fox call pro which is a way louder than the wam. I played it like a ****** trumpet imitating a distressed rabbit, still nothing. We crossed a ditch into another field and came to a gap into the next field, I shone the lamp in sure enough I picked up a red light I shining back, it was to big and bright to be a rabbit it must be a fox, sure enough the fox pro had worked. We crossed the wire into the field, my buddy went prone on the ground and I watched the fox with red filter while calling on the wam he came barrelling in towards us, I switched to white light and shouted at him to stop. My friend pulled the trigger bang and the single light went out. I paced out 110metres until I got to a big dead fox. The bullet had hit him in the back of the throat and blown out the back of his neck he was dead before he hit the ground. He was blind in one eye hence the reason for the one eye shining back us. There's only one thing worse than being blind in one eye and that's being blind in 2 eyes, he should have kept his mouth shut. Picture quality is a bit better on this one. We tried one more spot, but there was nothing as temperatures were at a fresh -5 Degrees we decided to call it a night. Total bag 2 foxes. My buddy had put a deposit on a .223 at Christmas, I think he'll be holding on to the hornet now as result of last nights performance. Here's a pic of the bag after this it was back to the chip shop and home. Edited January 9, 2010 by new to the flock

Mrs Sweepy
Well done Deeks bet the chips where nice Sweepy and Little Sweepy have been out most nights this week and not seen one. I went to work last evening at 6pm And saw one walking down the high street in the village. Which for a fox is very daring as it was still busy. So they must be getting desperate for food. That is untill lambing season kicks in. xxxxSuzy
