webber
Brian You are correct to try to obtain spring steel for your arms, but may struggle. If you do get some avoid welding it as you will affect the grain structure of the steel at the weld node and affect the properties of the steel that you desire. McF and I made one of the first "whirleys" ever, unlike some we didn't seek to commercialise the idea. We struggled to obtain spring steel in small quantity and so utilised BRIGHT mild steel rod. The original arms are still in service around two decades on. We used 1/4" as thats what we had on the rack at my works. You can weld the BRIGHT with little effect, but loctite 638 would be a better option. DONOT be tempted to use BLACK mild steel rod as this will bend easily and not return to its original state. If you do find a supply of suitable spring steel rod without breaking the bank please post up the details on PW. webber
