Spaniel
Took the eldest Springer out yesterday on the Pheasant shoot i am part of. Its only a small shoot with just a few hundred Pheasants down this season, so no high risks of the dog lifting loads of birds at the same time etc.....which suites me fine to be honest. I normally like working her down the hedges, where there is plenty of cover and long grass, from my point of walking with a gun i find it easier to handle her and the gun at the same time, as we can move at a nice speed together with me even getting the odd shot. Yesterday on one of the drives we done things a little different. It was a rough bit of ground with plenty of long grass and hedges which looked to provide some excellent cover for the birds. We had a few guns down on the left hand side at the bottom of the ground and we had a couple walking on the top on the right hand side. Myself and two other walking guns were going to push the ground through, so i decided i would put my gun away and i would work my dog in the centre of the other two walking guns.... now i have watched these guys all season and i knew both were very safe shots and i was comfortable with doing this, if you have guys shoting over your dog you must trust them and if you dont then dont do it.. Anyway we started to push forward and it was not long before my springer pushed her first bird up, a lovely hen. I blew my whistle instantly to get her to sit and the gun to my left took a shot which produced one in the bag. Moved forward some more getting her to quarter and she pushed another bird up, gun to my left took the shot and a nice cock bird ended up in the bag. By the time we got to the end of the drive my springer had pushed up about 5/6 pheasants for the walking guns. This is the first time i have done this with her, as normally she would be with me on the outside of the hedge so it would be only me shooting over her. So a very pleasant day, and almost on the last drive she pushed a nice cock bird out of the bushes, which i bagged with my first shot.
