CONCENTRATION

SNAKEBITE

I am struggling to maintain a balanced and focused training regime for my terrier.

The problem lies in what happens when I am not around!! The wife walks him in the morning before taking the little one to school. She says she has not got time to train him.

In the evening I take him out for a walk and incorparate his training into that. The problem lies in the fact that my daughter has to come along as the wife is out doing her cleaning job. Trying to control her and the concentrate on the dog is becoming hectic. My daughter distracts him and I feel that I am not doing my job properly.

On top of this my dog goes off and refuses to listen to the whistle when he sees another dog or person. All he wants to do is to is to run up and say hello!!

He also pulls on the lead. When he does this I pull the lead and return him to my side and say "heel" however with my daughter running off ahead he continues to pull. After a while he does calm down but it is getting frustrating!! My wife let's him pull on the lead and does not correct him which does not help.

When I take him out on his own he is another dog completley and a pleasure to walk/train (unless another dog is around!).

Any ideas or advice??

Thanks.

It is very hard to train the dog while watching the kids, believe me I know I train around 3 kids rangeing in age from 4 to 11 every day.

You need to clean up some of your basics, as well as change your training regime...the way you are performing certain exercises. You also need to put some of the missing steps into the recall by the sounds of it.

Is there any chance that you can make it up to Coventry on Oct. 22 to attend a lesson at the seminar? I am asking as it is alot easier to explain and have you perform the necessary correction in person, than me trying to do it over the internet. If you can make it up I can show you how to do the proper exercise and corrections, and how to fix the recall. If you teach the dog to heel properly then it will not pull your wife, and thus eliminate part of your problem.

Let me know

Thanks for the reply!

THere is no way I will be able to make it to Coventry. I have to work in the morning and have got commitments in the early evening.

Shame it is so far otherwise I would have tried to squeeze it in?

Do you ever come further South at all?

Thanks.......

I didn't mean to be rude about the coming down south bit, I was wondering if the courses you run are in different parts of the country or whether you tend to go back to the same area (due to friends or family etc).

I know you have to come from Canada so I fully understand.

Cheers.

No offence taken mate, I wasn't sure that you were aware of my location. This is my first time to England, hence the first time that I am running a training day there. I am visiting while over, and staying with friends in Coventry that is why the training day is being held there. I decided to put it on for people who were having problems, as there was interest from a number of forum members.

If there was enough interest in the south by people I would consider coming back over to do another training weekend at a later date, say spring time. I will get something together for you concerning your dog in the mean time. If I end up down your way this trip I will notify you, I am coming and I will gladly meet you, and help in person.

Cheers
