Fisherman Mike
Many years ago I did a few years census work for the BTO and got to know how to estimate large numbers of birds which flock up like waders and the like. This knowledge came in useful today when I saw a large flock of pigeons take flight from a wheat stubble field locally which has been seeded with rape between the stubble. I havent seen such a large flock congregated in this sort of numbers this early in the year since the mid 80,s when we had a couple of really cold winters. I would say there were 1500 birds easy in the 15 acre field and another 500 plus on another adjacent rape field. Neither are farms I shoot over but some lucky B----r does. BUT................... I anit gonna tell him
barrie0
Some biggish flocks (for around the farm I shoot on) forming during this last week 50-100 per flock approx . Problem is 1 shot and there off , had 15 on saturday, went again today but ended up with 1 . They are just not splitting up , one ******* off and the rest just follow , I would have left going again for a while longer but the forecast looks a bit **** for later in the week . Mind you have been doing well on the black stuff recently , but I may calm down using the 12 bore and get in the woods with the air rifle for a change . I think the thing is Barrie that they are moving from feeding area to feeding area in large flocks. Even in The morning when they leave the roost they are not doing so in ones twos or threes... you tend to get nothing and then 50 or so at once. Like you say one shot and there off to the next available field which is a bit quieter. The larger flock of the two took to the air as one.... circled the field a couple of times... and then headed west before dipping down to another field probably a 1 -2 miles away. Nice to see so many Birds around though, it ceratinly justifies the General licence and the pictures of 150 + bird bags.... Cheers. FM. Ps I didnt bother to reply to The DO YOU SIT Down Whilst shoting topic...... We all know the abnswer to that.
