JackReady
Hi Jack The whole set up is homemade as you can probably tell . The clamp onto the window attachment is from some old bicycle lights that has a ball and socket attachment . The door still opens as the set up is inline with the windscreen. I can reach the switch ok from inside as i have arms like an orangutan. Prov Gotta ya! How robust is that b&s joint. The Cluson one has a thumb screw set up that allows you to tighten the whole thing in place.
JackReady
Mark I must be a baboon, because I can reach the handle fine, and manouvre it pretty well without over stretching my arm. Come back and say that after you have used it for a few hours lamping. My bet will be you'll admit that it becomes a right pain in the neck. In more ways than one. Don't forget that this contraption was borne out of: a. Lack of money to spend on any of the fancy Lightforce clamps b. Not really wanting to have a permanent hole in the roof c. Having the metalworking skills of Delia Smith (probably) If you keep an eye on the For Sales ads on the various shooting forums you can often pick up the Lightforce roof bar and T handle for about 2/3rd the retail price but you have to be quick. I managed to get mine including a 170 lamp for £80. It had never been used. All I had to do was swap out the crappy cig lighter plug for a DIN plug. I'm not a fan of the hole in the roof set up. You have to keep taking the T handle off the roof plate when your not lamping and taking the lamp off the roof otherwise some ****** will nick it the first time you leave the Suzuki in a car park. humperdingle
Yeh I'll probably keep a look out for the Lightforce remote handle. Looking at my set-up, i'd be able to just make a larger hole to accomodate the Lightforce (52mm is it?) humperdingle
Tried out my lamping contraption last night whilst out with a mate, and i'm really pleased with it! It even managed to stay on the roof during a 5 mile trip to a different shoot - Kept the speed below 60mph though :worried: Initial concerns that the handle might be a little hard to reach were soon put to rest - Works perfectly fine, and managed to not drive into any ditches whilst operating the lamp and driving at the same time... Bonus! Very handy as an additional reversing lamp too! I just enlisted the additional support of a bungee hook cord to make doubly sure the whole thing wasn't going to be forced-off during the drive (without it there was a bit of play, so I was a bit concerned a sudden gust of wind at speed would peel the suction cups away) Happy so far!
