Maltese Falcon
Hi allIn question is my 2 yr old ESS dog. Recently we have noticed a tooth and section of the gum going light brown in colour. Should i be worried about this? Any suggestions as to cause/ treatment ect. Pictures included show the gum/tooth in question. He isnt very happy about it being touched! Many Thanks Beretta Hello Beretta, For starters let me just say that i am not a vet nor a dog expert allthough i have some experience with dogs. I can tell you what happend to my weimaraner bitch when she was about one year old. One day i noticed that one of her canine teeth turned a pink/purple colour. I took her to my vet and she said that it is trauma to the tooth and it could have been damaged by running in a wall, kicks by horses or cows or even biting on a stone/pebble. Well when she was a pup she used to pick stones, pebbles and chew on them and it took me ages to break this habit. The vet told me that often the tooth is only bruised, with bleeding into the pulp cavity but no damage to the outside of the tooth. I slept on it for a bit but within a few weeks the other three canine teeth took a pink purply colour so back i went to the vet. My vet refered me to a vet that specialise in orthodontic teeth work on dogs so i went to see him. After the vet inspected my dogs teeth he told me that if left alone the canine teeth will die from the inside out and it was possible for an abscess to develop and that my dog might have to have the canine teeth removed. This shocked me a bit and i asked the vet what was the treatment. The treatment was to drill a hole in the canine teeth, remove and wash out all the dead tooth pulp, then fill the root canal and cap the tooth on all four canines. I went ahead with this at a cost of £ 1150 which i had done on the insurance. The canine teeth on my dog are still strong and in place however the colour is a brownish colour now. The rest of the teeth are brilliant white its just the cannine teeth that are a brownish colour. It is possible that your springer had trauma to its tooth and that it took a pink/ purple colour which you might not have noticed it, then after a bit of time the tooth took a brownish colour due to the tooth dying from the inside. I would suggest that you take your dog to your vet and see what they say. Please don't take my word as gospel as it could be something else, just thought i share what my dog went through. I wiil try and take some photos of my dogs canine teeth and load them on so that you can compare it. Hope this helps. Regards George.
